Who: R'tel and Raelwyn Where: the beaches When: after supper
Ineth was utterly, completely, and totally relaxed. It was late evening; she was full from her meal and unless anyone had an urgent message to be taken somewhere, neither she nor her rider had anything else to do the rest of the day. The lingering memory of a good flight the sevenday before was also adding to her and R’tel’s good moods. He was lying against her side, re-reading parts of his favorite songs and books. Everyone now and then he would read a passage out loud for her benefit. She listened intently then forgot what he said the moment his mouth closed. Still, she liked to hear it.
She angled a green wing to protect him from the wind blowing in over the ocean, bringing cold air and stinging sand. R’tel snuggled in closer against her side and turned a page. Despite being from the South, he actually liked the (comparatively) cold weather. It gave him a chance to wear his leathers and not sweat buckets while he did. The dashing dragonrider, vaulting off his mount’s neck in the hold square turned all the holder girls’ heads, but fainting from heatstroke upon hitting the ground turned heads for all the wrong reasons.
He felt Ineth perk up and rolled his eyes. You can’t Search candidates in the Weyr. They’ve already been Searched, that’s why they’re here.
Ineth flashed him an image of the girl in question. But I think she would be perfect on a blue. Or a green. Maybe. Maybe a brown.
Not a bronze? he asked, unable to pass up a chance to rib his green. What about a wher? Would she do for a green wher?
Ineth audibly snorted, annoyed. Whers aren’t worth Searching for. Dirty, smelly things. R’tel reminded her, again, that she had never actually met a wher, but she was unswayed. They smell.
Another strong gust of wind blew a wall of sand into the air. Tell her to come in here and wait out the sandstorm, R’tel said, gathering up his scrap papers covered in quotes and tucking them between the pages of a well-worn book.
Overjoyed to be given explicit permission to talk to someone else, Ineth bombarded Raelwyn. Come here! Come here! You’ll get sanded to death sitting out there like that. Hide under my wing with my rider. He can keep you safe from the sand. Unless you like getting rubbed with sand. I think it’s quite nice, but, Ineth proudly showed a mental picture of R’tel, doesn’t like it. He says it hurts and can get in his eyes. It doesn’t get in my eyes, he another picture of her human half, says it’s because I have more eyelids. I never realized it but I guess I do. For a demonstration, Ineth opened and closed her outer two lids. She kept the inner lid closed tightly against the wind. I think it’s funny that you can have things about yourself that you never realized. Don’t you? She held up her wing, indicating where she wanted the girl to go.

A few moments ago, a walk on the beach after dinner had sounded like a splendid idea. It was a cool, clear, crisp winter evening in the South, the weather perfect if one dressed accordingly. It felt fresh and invigorating outside, and so Raelwyn quickly returned to the candidate barracks after having a rather sparse meal, pulling out some warmer clothing. A thick skirt and a nice, snug shirt would do the trick nicely, since even in Winter, the South never felt anything below chilly to her. As she left the barracks, Tydus landed neatly on her shoulder, stretching out across her neck and covering both of her shoulders with his bulk. Now that he was fully grown, the bronze could no longer fit on just one of her shoulders, and instead left his front paws to dangle off one while his tail drooped down over the other, his tail curling around her upper arm like a strange bracelet. Smiling softly at her flit, the candidate stroked his back lovingly, only to laugh as a burst of cold air announced the arrival of her latest pet.
Cloud screeched indignantly at being left in her room, his eyes whirling unhappily as he swooped down before her. “You were asleep, love. I didn’t want to wake you.” The girl said softly, holding out her hands invitingly. Cheeping in a mollified tone, the brown landed on her palms, able to fit quite easily since he was merely a hatchling, and tiny brown at that. Eyeing the bronze upon her shoulders with distaste, Cloud turned his nose straight up and went about ignoring Tydus, acting as if the other flit wasn’t even there. Of course, he had the claws and the muscle to put that other in his place, but Hisgirl wouldn’t allow it. In fact, everything about Cloud screamed ‘predator’, from his sleek and muscular build to his narrowed eyes and abnormally long claws. The brown was small, yes, but Raelwyn had a feeling Tydus would perhaps lose out against him, and she had no desire to see either of her sweet pets injured.
Holding her hands close so Cloud could curl up against her stomach, the harper strode easily down the steps that led to the beach, smiling when her bare feet hit the sand. Born in the North, Raelwyn had never been able to fully appreciate the beauty of these waters until she had come to Cerulean for the first time. Ever since then, she had always spent her free time here upon the beach, whether she was practicing her flute or just taking a long, relaxing walk. This was the girl’s favorite place to be. However, as she stepped upon the sands, getting further and further from the stairs, the wind picked up, and soon, the harper was squinting her eyes against the onslaught, sighing in exasperation. Well, so much for her perfect evening. Her two flits shut their inner lids tightly against the assault, able to bear up much easier than their bonded. Turning, Rael was about to try to head back when a voice suddenly bombarded her.
Stumbling in surprise, the candidate nearly fell over as the strange voice echoed through her mind joyously, having never heard this one before. There were a select few dragons that had spoken to her, Dalisth being the most common, but out here alone, she had not expected to have any dragons bespeaking her! Turning her head, squinting against the sand, Raelwyn tilted her head to the side as she saw a green farther down the beach looking at her, and knew that had to be her. Oh! Hide under her wing? That was rather kind of the dragoness to offer, the girl reflected, and quickly set off to do just that. He? Her rider? An image flashed into her mind along with the voice, and the harper blushed lightly. This was going to be interesting, then.
Approaching the green, Raelwyn ducked under the elevated wing and paused, her eyes sweeping over the rider lying against his dragon. Her two flits perked up as they, too, saw him, Tydus’s eyes taking on a hint of red while her brown curled his lip slightly in disgust. This was not His, therefore, he didn’t like it, and not surprisingly, her bronze felt the same. Though, he would never admit to agreeing with that small-stupid-brown in a hundred turns. Sighing inwardly, the harper sent her pets a very commanding thought to behave themselves before she smiled at the boy. Faranth, it was a good thing she had the patience of a blue dragon, or Tydus and Cloud would stay in trouble. “Thank you so much for letting me duck in here, and please my appreciation on to your green as well. You are heroes, I promise you.” Green eyes bright, the girl quickly sat, folding her knees and smoothing her skirt in a practiced motion so as not to flash an indecent amount of skin. Here, she had a chance to meet yet another rider, and his dragon had actually spoken to her! Oh, it didn’t matter if the sand ruined her walk; this evening was turning out to be perfect.
Curling her hands around Cloud, who had settled in her lap, the candidate smiled. “I’m Raelwyn, and this is Tydus,” She pointed to her bronze, “and Cloud” she said, indicating the brown resting on her legs. “Oh!” The harper suddenly laughed lightly, and glanced towards the green. “And please tell your lovely green she’s indeed right, I do think it’s funny that we can have things we’ve never realized about ourselves.” Smiling, sure that the rider would understand, the girl awaited his reply, to see just who she would have to thank for coming to her rescue.

R’tel sat up as Raelwyn joined him under Ineth’s wing. It was a small space, causing them to sit close together, something he didn’t mind in the least. He blushed a little and grinned when she called him a hero. “Well, you know. I hated to see you getting sand-blasted out there.”
He nodded to her two firelizards, a little jealous of them. “I’m R’tel and this lump that talks too much is Ineth.” He patted the green’s side affectionately. “You can tell her yourself. She can hear you, you know.”
Yes I can, very well, Ineth added to both of them.
R’tel leaned towards the girl and dropped his voice to a whisper. “Just don’t expect her to remember what you tell her. She’s a very…green-minded green.” He winked and leaned back.
I heard that too. Ineth said, rumbling in amusement.
Having introduced himself and Ineth, R’tel was really out of topics of conversation. Still, he wanted to keep up the suave dragonrider façade. “So, uh, have you been at the Weyr long?” Not his best work, but it would do.

The harper within Raelwyn uncurled a bit as the boy blushed at her praise, a little smile dancing upon her lips as he grinned. Well, actually, was it because of her praise or because of their close proximity? She doubted it was the latter. The candidate had never really thought of herself as overly attractive, despite whatever her best friend L’mar told her. Not to mention a dragonrider wasn’t likely to even look at her twice, despite being close to her in age. Still, she had until this storm stopped to get to know this rider, and she would take advantage of it. “I am forever in your debt for that, believe me.” She laughed, both of her flits glancing at her as she did. Hmm, their girl was happy.
Whirling eyes raking over the male as they were introduced, the two firelizards seemed to have mixed reactions to the greenrider, though the end result was the same. Tydus glared at the boy, clearly mistrusting of this smiling male that was a little too close to Hisgirl for comfort, and Cloud displayed a rather noticeable apathy, quickly turning his head to ignore the rider altogether. Rael inwardly sighed. She had to work on their people skills. Still, her bronze no longer hissed and bared his teeth upon first introductions, so that was at least some progress. The brown still had a long way to go too.
“I am most pleased to meet you both, R’tel and Ineth.” The candidate replied, inwardly excited. Even if it was only until the storm passed, she had a chance to get to know another new face, and a dragonrider at that! Raelwyn loved meeting new people more than anything, and dragonriders were her favorite, as she had a rather healthy respect for them all. Smiling as the greenrider replied and the dragon’s voice echoed in her mind, the candidate closed her eyes and grinned, savoring the lovely sound of Ineth’s voice. “I didn’t want to seem presumptuous.” Raelwyn quickly replied, her gaze sliding over to rest upon the dragoness. “Some riders do not appreciate candidates talking to their partners without permission.” Grinning as her green eyes once more settled upon the boy, the harper winked. “I’m sure you would appreciate my favorite color being green, then, Ineth.” The girl said with a laugh, finding it satisfyingly ironic that she had chosen to wear mostly green today, quite aptly proving her words.
Humming to herself for a moment at R’tel’s query, the candidate nodded. “For a fair amount of time, actually.” She replied, hands travelling lightly over Cloud’s body, the brown rumbling lowly in pleasure as she did. “I’ve been at Cerulean ever since it’s been a weyr. I transferred here from Fort when I heard about…” Raelwyn faltered here, swallowing before continuing, “Well, when I heard they were in need of hands to help with the new Weyr.” Tilting her head to the side, the harper tapped her fingers down Cloud’s spine as she mentally calculated. “I’ve actually been a candidate for about…four turns now. I was training at the Harper Hall when I was Searched. Of course, it was a big change, coming here from the North, but it’s so beautiful down here. I haven’t had a chance to see much of the South, though, because I’ve had my hands full since arriving at Cerulean.” Realizing she had been talking far too much, Rael blushed a bit, ducking her head slightly. “What about you, R’tel? How did you come to Impress your fantastic Ineth?”
