Who: Haverisen and Chore Buddies!
What: Chores, Fish, and some playful dolphins
When: Mid morning
“The ocean really is amazing…” Given the pre-noon time, and despite the bustle, the young man currently working through a net was surprisingly alone in his corner, having proved from early morning that he knew what he was doing (though it had always been on a smaller scale before now) and was a steady worker. His voice was amused, and somewhat deeper than normal, though the volume was low. He certainly wasn’t expecting the sudden wave of water, or the chittering greeting from below. Shaking his head, he stared down at a gray melon and amused black eye, before another splash from the dolphin left his soaked.
“Hey!” Laughter passed his lips as he straightened, grateful he’d worn light trousers today for this chore, and left his blade in a safe, dry, but easy to reach place. As he watched the dolphin cavort away at a signal from the Handler in the water, Ver waved to the man and grinned, before going back to work. He was off to the side of the main docks, pulling his way through nets and sorting out the catches in them for shipping, releasing, using as bait, or whatnot. Despite the oil and grime, he was actually having quite a good time, and privately admitted that the wave of water was rather refreshing.
Moreover, the oil was definitely helping to protect his skin from the reflected glare-it added to the salve he’d rubbed in this morning before heading out once he knew his destination. Two years on the road with his kin had taught him the need for taking care of himself, if nothing else. Shaking the water off, Haverisen rolled his eyes, and went back to sorting out the catch, knowing it was going to the Weyr tables as well. The array of food the waters provided was a blessing right now, after the damage done by the attacking and invading force that had upset both the flight and the touching.
They needed as much cheap, good things as they could find, and fish were a delicacy in some other places. When one had dragons, and the means, there was an easy way to make a profit. Shaking his head at himself, and reminding that part of his mind firmly that he was NOT practicing his Trade at the moment, the young man slapped a lid on a full crate of packtails, hoisting it off towards one of the other men to handle. Glancing up, he wondered briefly what times the other candidates were slotted for, and took a break to get a drink of chilled juice he’d tucked in a flask under the dock, kept cool in the water.
The constant worry for his sibling, and the future, wasn’t far from his mind, though, as he went back to work. To one side he’d been allowed to make a pile of the fish too small for much else, and most of them were favorites of the dolphins. In the small pen he’d helped create in the water that held them, (a live pen) he’d added a steady amount, and made a note to ask the dock master about extending it. While the fish in there wouldn’t grow large, it was handy to use for fire lizard treats and bribes, or for the playful odontoceti, such as the one who’d made a mess of him this morning.
