Character:
Name: E'ric
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Weyrling
Description: Despite having spent nearly his entire life in hard labor, Elric is a lean, well-cut figure that does not appear muscular or burly in the slightest. One would think that, by now, he would be swelled with muscle, but that is not the case. Instead, he has a rather slim body, and arms that have a slightly tough shape to them, but nothing that truly looks all that strong. Upon first glance, this candidate would look rather trim and average, and not all that dangerous. However, this could not be further from the truth. Beneath his slim form is a surprising amount of strength, enough to put some of the toughest of guys on the ground. There are several boys who look much, much stronger than him, but in all actuality, Elric could lay them out flat if he so wished. His legs are extremely strong from practicing his craft from an early age, and he is fit enough to run for a candlemark without tiring.
Not very tan in spite of his life of travel, Elric possesses a rather even skin tone that belies the hefty amount of time he has spent outside. He is not pale by any means, but still holds a lighter complexion than one would expect. Always rigidly straight in posture, the candidate never slouches and walks with a clam, even step. In fact, everything about him is calm, from his signature ‘neutral and cool expression’ to his secretive eyes. No matter how long you stare at him, or try to study his face or his reactions, Elric will reveal nothing. It is extremely difficult to tell what he is thinking, since the only look he ever wears is ‘polite yet distant.’ His expressions do vary on occasion, however, the most frequent being a highly-quirked brow when he is skeptical or rather interested in a certain turn of events. Or, if an individual has managed to actually touch a nerve inside this patient candidate, his dark eyes become intense, and they can easily feel that heavy stare upon them. It’s unsettling.
While the candidate tends to appear slightly cool and standoffish, this in no way detracts from his good looks. In fact, Elric might not be a flirt by means, but he still can turn a lady's head by appearance alone. His eyes are very dark in color, so much so that they usually appear black, and almost always unreadable. Those eyes are steady, unwavering, and can be rather unnerving when he chooses to pin just the right expression on someone. His hair is black, about two inches in length, and the boy is careful to keep it styled away from his face. The candidate is not what one would call handsome, because that doesn’t really do his attractiveness justice. He is purely adorable, with boyishly-charming features and a perfect jawline.
There is nothing fancy in his wardrobe, which mainly consists of extremely plain clothing and stark hues. Most of his shirts are either white or some variation of blue, while his pants and boots are always, always black. Elric has never enjoyed anything flashy or extravagant, and even to gathers and formal events, he will wear unadorned garments. Of course, with his craft, the boy travelled great distances over wild terrain, and had to learn a defensive skill. As such, the candidate is quite adept at hand-to-hand combat, and he also has a couple of throwing knives slipped into a holster stitched onto the back of his belt. Elric holds a decent accuracy with them, but his true strength lies in close range combat with his hands and feet.
Personality: Logical is the first word that comes to mind when describing this candidate, for Elric is a very intelligent and clever individual. Always the voice of reason amidst chaos, he possesses the ability to think clearly in the most dangerous or heated of circumstances. As he has proven upon several occurrences under extreme conditions, he is exceptionally composed under pressure and rather resolute, tending to think sensibly even under the most demanding of situations. Because of this, Elric is quite a composed warrior, responding to any peril with cool, logical actions. With this rational demeanor, he will perhaps come off as aloof or cold, and he is, within certain bounds. This is the result of his calm personality and quite emotionless front. Although, because of his clever mind, the boy holds a very dry sense of humor and a quick, sharp wit. There are few who could ever get anything over on this candidate, and if you think to trade jests with him, you had better be fast on your feet. He has a quick tongue and more often than not can silence even the most clever of foes.
Even though he holds an aloof, composed demeanor, this candidate is nothing less than a rock. Naught can move him when he sets his mind to something. Stubborn doesn't really do him justice, because obstinate is the last thing one would call Elric. Instead, he is very dedicated to his beliefs, and once he sets out to accomplish a goal, he's a juggernaut of will. The boy has deep courage when it comes to sticking to his convictions, and trying to talk him out of something isn't going to do you much good. Despite his admittedly impressive prowess, the candidate tends to rely on his mind more than his strength. He is fiendishly clever, intellectually independent, and has his own views that cannot be swayed by another. Modest and slightly secretive, Elric rarely lets others know what he is thinking, and it is rather difficult to read what is within those dark eyes. His voice is particularly reminiscent of this, a smooth, emotionless sound with words spoken clearly, properly, and perfectly articulated. The candidate never uses contractions, and he will never use any sort of slang or anything less than extremely formal wording. Try to read his voice? Not likely. He won't give anything away.
With this sense of composed reason, the candidate hardly ever exhibits a temper. Because he thinks rather logically, he takes few affronts. Elric is the type of person that will master his irritation and anger, burying those emotions no matter what others decide to shove onto him. He will take and take and take, without ever revealing his temper. However, despite his seemingly endless patience, even this boy has his limits, and when he snaps, he really goes off. It does not occur very often however; only if he has been pressed for days on end. Quite usually, this candidate is collected and very calm, speaking with a cool, even voice and holding a neutral expression. Most would label him as kind yet rather unemotional, for though is not exactly a vivacious person, Elric holds an inner stillness and gentle manner that can be pleasant if you overlook his detached tendencies.
Despite his highly reserved personality, Elric holds a deep love and affection for all of his friends. He would do absolutely anything for those who are dear to him, no matter what. He is passionately devoted. Even though the candidate does not express his affections as openly as some, he feels them particularly intensely. The boy may seem like he is slightly cool when it comes to his feelings, but that could not be further from the truth. Because of his calm demeanor, nothing seems to affect him too greatly, but he feels strong devotion and loves without reservation. Most people cannot understand this, but those closest to him will realize his true, inner emotions, and will know he is loyal and faithful beneath that cool face. His friends will know that, despite his seemingly logical exterior, inside his emotions are broiling. However, even without flirtatious tendencies and a winning smile, Elric has had his share of close friends and even admirers. Girls would love a chance to crack the seemingly emotionless front, and guys are just plain curious as to what makes him tick. Get to know him, though, and this candidate is going to win you over, even if it seems highly....illogical.
History: Born to parents who were rather polar opposites of each other, Elric has a complicated past. His father, Saric, was a rather dour astronomer that cared far more for his work than his family. Oh, he supplied for them of course, but when it came to affection or being involved in his children's lives, Saric used a very aloof, heavy-handed approach. Elia, his mother, was a rather sweet-tempered weaver who was known far and wide for her lovely tapestries. She had a great talent for recreating scenes with cloth, and between she and Saric, they had more than enough marks to live comfortably. Despite her busy schedule, Elia spent what time she could with her children, and Elric held a very soft spot for her. No matter how much work she had, the weaver never allowed her craft to become more important than her family. She was a devoted, loving wife to Saric, though many questioned why when they saw how coldly he treated her. However, when Elric asked her why she loved her husband so much when he acted so aloof, she would only smile wisely with a secret in her eyes. She would always say it didn't matter how he acted, she knew he loved her, and would leave it at that.
Though never truly understanding, Elric accepted that, and had a rather enjoyable childhood. He had a single sibling, a brother named Selric who was one turn older than he, and they got along rather well. They got in trouble as all children do, but were relatively good kids, and were thought of rather well about Honshu. Elia loved her boys with all her heart, and was the soothing presence beside their father's rather cold personality. Seric did however do one good thing for his sons; he made sure they were highly educated. As an astronomer, the man was extremely intelligent and spoke with perfect articulation. As such, he expected his children to do the same, and made sure they had a private tutor. It was Selric's opinion that he only did this because he didn't want his children to 'embarrass' him by being less than perfect, but Elia would always scold him gently and say it was because Seric loved them and wanted his kids to have a good future.
Spending much of their time with private lessons and helping their mother with cloth and thread, the two boys were not exactly the most social of kids. After they turned seven and eight turns, they hardly played at all, and spoke like teenagers rather than children. Coached in proper speech, both Selric and Elric spoke quite well, and their mother was proud. Despite his slightly strict life, Elric was happy, though it wouldn't last long. Soon, Seric began pressuring the two to choose crafts for themselves, rather subtly indicating that he would prefer it if they chose to follow in his steps and become astronomers. Both hoping to make their father proud, the boys took on his craft, and studied under him religiously. Though never growing any warmer in personality or treating them with any sort of affection, Seric was proud, and spent far more time with his sons than he ever had. However, Seric's brother, Seadryn, was also an astronomer, and helped with the boys in any way he could. He was a good uncle for the kids, a far more warm and vibrant presence than their strict and cool father. He made their days cheerful.
As Selric turned twelve and Elric eleven, they both had bright futures ahead as astronomers. Though still young of course, they studied under their father, and were rather quick, learning swiftly. It was in this turn that their happiness died. One night, the boys and Seric were late returning home, having stayed longer than intended studying charts and memorizing constellations. When they reached their house, it was silent, nary a sound echoing through. Their father pushed forward, striding through the halls and calling for Elia. No answer came. In the dining room, their two drudges were laying upon the floor dead, long gashes down their chests. Now in a panic, the three began desperately searching for Elia, only to find her near her loom, also dead, stabbed through the heart and bleeding profusely. She had not even been dead long. All their valuables and jewelry were gone, and it was obvious they had been robbed, but the killer, or killers, were never found.
More grief than Elric could have ever believed blossomed within him then, and his emotions seemed to just freeze over at that point. He stayed in the house for days after burying his mother, neither eating nor really even realizing he was alive. After all, he was only a kid, just eleven turns old, and the most precious person in his life had been stolen away without warning. He can still see her bloody corpse in his nightmares. During this time, Selric was no better, avoiding everyone to take long walks without explanation, sometimes not returning for days. Seric himself seemed shocked and even colder than usual after the tragic loss of his wife, growing more aloof and distant than he was before. Now, he didn't bother to ask if his children wanted to study anymore--he just left and came home to eat and sleep. Elric only had one person in his life that seemed to care about him during this dark time, and that was his uncle, Seadryn. He tried to help Seric and Selric as well, but neither of them wanted his pity or his aid, and avoided him. Elric, however...Elric needed someone, and Seadryn was it.
With the boy sleeping little and eating even less, Seadryn knew that he would have died if someone didn’t start forcing him to move on with his life. They stayed in Honshu for only two more sevendays before the journeyman astronomer decided to leave, knowing that Elric needed a change of scenery and a fresh start to move past his pain. Seric didn't care, and by now Selric was nowhere to be found, and Seadryn wanted to give Elric a chance to become well again. A shell of his former self, the boy silently followed his uncle, merely doing as he was asked and never really enjoying anything. He had grown quiet and reserved, and even a turn after his mother’s death, he was not the same. They settled at Southern Hold, his uncle taking a job working with one of the local smiths to help pay the bills. Seadryn had plenty of marks saved from working as an astronomer, and with his meager salary, he did well for him and his nephew. Elric did not change, though. However, despite his grief, he didn't want his uncle to have to support them alone, and took up a craft that surprised Seadryn greatly. The boy became a runner. He had always been fast, and in decent shape, and with his current skills, it was the only thing he could find.
Seadryn was at a loss when it came to the boy, for he had tried everything he could think of to help him. Finally, though, just as Elric turned thirteen, something seemed to be different about the lad. The runner suddenly seemed better, no longer in anguish, but merely…logical. Tired of the pain and grief, Elric had changed, adopting such a composed, rational outlook on life that many found him to be almost cold. However, this was only his way of dealing with the pain, just as everyone adopts their own way of adjusting to anything unpleasant in their life. Now, the boy was one of calmest individuals Seadryn had ever known, always patient and speaking in an even, cool voice. It was not the same Elric that had become his apprentice those five long turns ago, but it was better than the hollow shell he had been. Now, it was time to move again. Seadryn was ready to return to studying at a Starcraft Hall, wanting to move to the Western Continent. He would never make his nephew return to Honshu, after all. However, the boy had a different plan for his life. Astronomy was his father's craft, something he studied to make his old man proud, and Elric wanted to change.
Insisting that his uncle follow his dream and return to the Starhall, Elric focused his attention upon his current trade. Running. By now, the boy had developed rather strong legs, and had discovered he had a natural stamina and wind for running far and fast. With this, he grew stronger, leaner, more tough than he had ever been, and because of his extremely active lifestyle, his body was slim and trim in every respect. He looked lean, but despite that, there was a hard, sinewy muscle underneath that made him stronger than many would have believed. Of course, since he spent so much time outside and among strangers, and with his mother's death in his mind, Elric also devoted himself to learning self-defense from some of his fellow crafters. He grew adept with throwing knives, which he took to keeping in a sheath stitched to the back of his belt, but his real talent was with hand-to-hand combat. None could defeat him when it came to that.
Finally, in his eighteenth turn, dragons were sent out to Search for likely candidates for Trith's clutch. The golden beauty of Cerulean had Flown, and a clutch would soon be laid. Elric had seen dragons at Honshu quite often, of course, and as a child had often dreamed of becoming a rider, but those thoughts had been cast out of his mind for turns. It was quite fascinating to the boy when he returned from delivering a message one day to find a blue dragon staring at him, the rider asking if he wanted to come to the weyr as a candidate. For a moment, it occurred to the highly logical boy to say no, but something within him wouldn't allow it. Elia, his mother, had always adored dragons, and had often spent some of her free time sitting on their porch, staring at them with a dreamy expression. This would be a way of honoring her, should be prove worthy to Impress. And, beneath that cool, logical front of his, Elric still had a little voice within that revered the dragons, dreaming of a life with them. He went.
Fun Facts: Elric never uses contractions, and speaks with extremely formal wording. He is exceptionally skilled in hand-to-hand combat, despite how slim he looks. He likes to test his mind with riddles. Elric hates nearly all types of red meat, but loves fish and fruit. He will never consume alcohol, as it seems illogical to him.

Description: Though dark and reddish in hue, the bright and clear shine of this dragon’s hide clearly marks him as a bronze. A few areas along the edges of his wings, his muzzle, and his claws lighten to a bright crimson shade - making him look more than a little intimidating to those who don’t know him. His wingsails will seem much the same color in the sunlight. Other areas around his knee and elbow joints, shoulder wing-joints, and tail fade to a much darker brown-black color. There will always be a certain amount of calmness and poise that Orith will always hold himself with, which could act as both a magnet and a deterrent for others.
While he will tower over his clutchmates in size, he is in no way bulky. Harder to see as a hatchling - but which will become more and more apparent as he ages - every inch of his frame is wrapped in thick, corded muscle. Though he will still lack the agility of the smaller colors, he will have a much greater speed than many even approaching his size. One attribute that might cause a few issues at first are his wings: they are a bit too small for his frame. Thankfully, he will grow into them as he ages, eventually gaining a wingspan more suitable to his size. However, he might have a few issues with them still when it comes time to learn how to fly; in this area, he will likely be thankful for his telekinetic prowess, which will even the course just a bit.
One oddity for this dragon is that he will have a problem with twitching. It is in no way a restless gesture (in fact, he would probably prefer to remain quite still most of the time), but instead an effect of maladaptive genetics. Other than his own annoyance with the unconscious tick, it won’t seem like such a problem until flying. In the air, such movements will alter his wings and tail and affect everything from turning to gliding to just staying aloft. Through a vast amount of patience and determination on both his and his Rider’s sides, it can be trained away, but it will take a vast amount of hard work and concentration. Even once perfected, there will still be moments when he sleeps or when he is truly too upset to focus that the twitching might temporarily resume.
Personality: “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that everything is comprehensible.” This is a sentiment that Orith lives by. Mundane or bizarre, every action has an explanation. Sometimes the logic is convoluted or based on misguided perceptions, but it is still possible to trace the line of it. If anyone is able to do such a thing, it is this bronze. To him, understanding the generally incomprehensible is almost a hobby. The upside of this is that he will grow an understanding of the other beings of Pern beyond perhaps any other; the downside is that he will rarely settle for ‘because’ or ‘I don’t know’ for an answer, seeking the knowledge with a persistence that can be at times trying. Another effect of this is that Orith may, at times, makes comments that are almost cryptic. There will always be a reasoning behind them, but it might take a person awhile to piece together the puzzle of his draconic logic. He will particularly love speaking in such a way to his Rider, testing him constantly to reaffirm their bond was the correct one (not that he ever doubts, but he likes having proof). His tendencies might possibly drive away some beings, but perhaps will also draw others due to the steadfast character it gives him.
Despite his general adherence to the lines of logic, this does not always mean he is correct. But, like any bronze, he does not like hearing such a thing. He does have the typical bronze pride, but it seems somewhat more subtle due to his poised demeanor. He greatly enjoys using his mindpower to find various reasons as to why he and His are superior to the vast majority, and takes it as an affront to be told differently. Possibly one of the few ways to ruffle this guy’s pinions is to present a logical argument that would find him inferior in any way. (He would likely spend hours mulling over the facets of the argument, searching for inherent weaknesses; if none were found, his Rider better be prepared for a strenuous workout in whatever field that Orith found lacking!) The only beings that he would find no uneasiness in being found the lesser to would be the great golds of Pern, and possibly one or two elder dragons (likely bronzes) that he might look to for mentorship.
He does have a touch of the usual bronze flirtatiousness, but he is much more suave about it than many of his brethren. He values propriety almost as much as his Rider, which often makes his amorous advances seem a bit slow, likely to drive off a few of the ‘friendlier’ greens in a huff. There will always be a steadfastness about his character, an iron will that will make him the rock that many might choose to weather them through a storm. While not overtly ambitious, he will have a low tolerance for sub-quality work that will lead him to demand more of both himself and those around him, and he will likely rise quickly in rank because of it. He would make a good leader in his own right, but would make an incredible second to be a leader’s voice of reason as well. To those who will come to know him, the almost blood-like crimson decorating his hide will come to symbolize not fear, but pride, glory, and honor to the last. Adding to this, he will be incredibly difficult to anger, finding little use for the emotion when it will simply impede his ability to reason through a difficult situation. However, it the rare moments that he might possibly be pushed to that edge, his wrath is a ferocious one to behold. The truest definition of a controlled warrior, he will be a beacon no matter his placement.
