V'mio's Lesson Plan (by Maykat):
Search is most common after a Flight and especially after a clutch is laid, however candidates can be Searched at any time. Candidates are to check in with the Candidatemaster upon arriving at the Weyr, preferably with the Searchrider in tow. A file will be kept on each candidate indicating when they arrived in the Weyr, relevant skills or craft training, family to be brought to the Hatching, and date of birth. Candidates will get a brief lecture on the rules of candidacy and a quick introduction to Weyrlife before being assigned a place in the barracks. Candidates are encouraged to pick up a craft or skill within the Weyr so they have a back-up in case they never Impress.
Candidates are encouraged to experiment sexually while they are at the Weyr. This reduces the chances of a weyrling being a virgin during their dragon’s first Flight. V’mio and Felath are always available for abortions and preventative trips between. All female candidates will be examined by the dolphins after the Clutching to check for pregnancy. Female candidates are expected to practice abstinence between the Clutching and Hatching, with serious punishment if they do not. Candidates are also strongly discouraged from forming serious romantic relationships while in candidacy. These often do not survive weyrling training, causing stress for the rider and dragon.
Candidacy follows a rhythm based on the Hatching cycle. From the Hatching to the next Flight, candidate life is much like a normal Weyr worker. Illiterate candidates or those without a Harper or apprentice education will go to lessons in the morning, while the rest of the candidates work in their crafts or do chores on a rotating basis. Candidate lessons are held twice per sevenday in the evenings and are required to be eligible to Stand. New candidates usually attend an extra lesson per sevenday until they are caught up to the general level of the rest of the class.
Once a queen has flown, more time is spent in lessons, learning how the Weyr is organized and its relation to the larger world. The basics of Impression and the mental bond are examined as well as they can, and basic dragon anatomy and care is taught. Guest lectures are given by riders of each color and at least one day is devoted to what happens when a rider is left dragonless. Threadfighting techniques are briefly covered. The completeness of the dragon/rider bond is stressed throughout candidacy. V’mio does his best to squash any ideas about dragonriding as an easy or safe life.
After a candidate has been through one complete Hatching to Hatching cycle, they are allowed to return to their home hold or crafthall until the next Clutching. Candidates that age out are given the choice of staying at the Weyr or returning to their hold or crafthall.
