Welcome to Time of the Dragons
Pern was going through a prosperous period in its history. All were happy, safe. They knew Thread could no longer fall from the skies. They were people who knew no fear. They had rich lives, living in towns that had spread out from the Holds. Once thread had been eliminated, there was no need to hide away in the caves.
The Weyrs had dwindled down to three. The dragons weren't needed to fight Thread any more, they hadn't for many turns, they carried out tasks, flying messages, carrying out chores, but generally they were just lazy. Their numbers had dropped to 500, with three old Queens, a new one appeared when she was needed.
Life changed abruptly, a huge rock crashed to Pern from the skies, bringing with it showers of smaller meteors. The large meteor struck the sea, landing in the Western Ocean. It sent earthquakes through Pern and tidal waves crashing across the coast. No part of Pern escaped some kind of fall out from the meteor.
The days, and seven days that followed where hard. People died, dragons died, suddenly all Pernese faced extinction. Dragons died in huge numbers, the few remaining were sent to the long abandoned High Reaches Weyr. It was high in the mountains, away from the illness that was spreading through the lower lands, claiming thousands.
From 500 dragons, suddenly there were barely 100 left. There was only one old Queen left now, the other two succumbed to the aftermath of the meteor hit. Riders did not know if she would rise to mate, she was many turns in age, her rider, a brave woman named Aedue was almost 67 turns in age. One morning the Golden Juith took to the sky, her challenge to all Bronzes ringing out through the mountains of High Reaches.
Two turns after the meteor struck, the Queen flew, none knew if it would be a success, but they hoped it would, they needed a new Queen, they needed a clutch. Hope had to come from somewhere and a clutch would provide that.
The old Queen's flight wasn't long or high, she was caught by a Bronze. His rider one of the few younger riders. The pair flew together and then returned to the Weyr, everyone held their breath waiting for the clutch they hoped would soon appear in the old hatching cavern.
As Pern held its breath for new dragons, a new star appeared on the horizon. The star seemed to glow red, people began to whisper. Could thread be returning? And if so, how would they survive with so few dragons?
Pern was entering a time of chaos.
Could the Planet, so badly crippled, survive the return of its old enemy?
Only time would tell...
