Character:
Name: Batavia
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation:Homosexual
Occupation:Journeyman dragonhealer/Candidate
Description: Tall, thick and deeply tanned, Batavia jokes that she’s just a herdbeast on its back legs. She’s not really an attractive woman, having a square jaw, large nose and heavy brow. Her eyes are round, wide set and a muddy brown. Despite the southern heat and humidity, Batavia refuses to cut her dark brown hair. She usually braids it into two plaits and wraps them around her head, topping the whole thing off with a colorful scarf or wide-brimmed hat. When it’s let down, her hair is long enough that Batavia has to be careful not to sit on it.
With the exception of her hair, Batavia is not a vain woman. She wears whatever clothes she can get from the Weyrstores. Her main clothing requirements are that they not show blood and redwort stains. She prefers trousers to skirts, even in her gather finery. She does have a weakness for brightly colored and patterned scarves to wear in her hair.
Personality: Batavia is loud, boisterous and vulgar. She prefers the company of boys and men, having spent most of her time in a man’s profession. She’s uncomfortable with traditionally feminine roles, especially childcare, and will resent being pushed into anything she considers too ‘girly.’ She’s forthright, often to the point of being rude. Despite this she has no problem apologizing for her words or actions. She cannot stand when people dance around and issue, if she has a problem she addresses it quickly and to the point. Batavia rarely holds a grudge, she’s able to forgive and forget and move on.
She is very meticulous in her work and allows no mistakes or excuses from herself or others. She’s a very quick learner and has an excellent memory. However she is a terrible teacher, quickly becoming frustrated and often just doing the task herself rather than try to explain it several times. She’s also an extreme micro-manager and has a hard time delegating tasks. It’s not that she doesn’t trust other people to do things well, she just knows that it will be done right it she does it herself.
Batavia enjoys the easy sexuality of the Weyr and quickly lost her holdbred morality. Far from the holder girl fantasy of being swept off her feet by a bronzerider, Batavia has had several casual relationships, most of which ended amicably.
History: Batavia was born the eighth child of eighteen total children to cotholders in Honshu territory. Her childhood was normal by Pernese standards, when Batavia was nine her mother died in childbirth and her father quickly remarried a woman with several children of her own from a previous marriage. His four-month widowerhood was not due to callousness, in fact he loved Batavia’s mother very much. But a cothold needs all the hands it can get, and his especially needed a woman’s helping hand.
Batavia got along fine with her stepmother and step-siblings. To ease the overcrowding of their cothold, and because her father considered it a useful tradition, Batavia was fostered to her mother’s sister at age twelve. Batavia loved the herdbeast ranch her aunt lived on. It was so much bigger than the cothold, with so many more people. Batavia had a puppy-dog crush on one of the herdbeast wranglers and was soon a fixture in the barns and yards.
After realizing that she had a knack with the animals, Batavia tried to get the boss of the ranch to take her on as an apprentice. A traditional-minded man, he was reluctant to accept a girl. But Batavia was persistent and despite his attempts to run her off, after the better part of a Turn he relented and accepted her as an apprentice. She excelled in her work, benefitted by hands-on training and having many experienced teachers.
After two Turns, Batavia was preparing to travel to Keroon to continue her training formally at the Hall. Instead she was searched from the docks by a bluerider for Southern Weyr while she was waiting to board her ship north. Enamored by the dragons, Batavia began working with the dragonhealers at Southern in between Hatchings. She earned a journeyman rank at the age of eighteen and volunteered to go to the newly opened Cerulean Weyr.
Fun Facts: Batavia can still do rope tricks, a talent she showcases whenever she can. She also doesn’t believe she’ll ever Impress, something she’s come to terms with, but never told anyone.
Bonded Critter(s):
Type: Fire-Lizard
Name:
Color: Brown
Age: Newly Hatched (First Month, Turn 8 of Tenth Pass) (Mid-Winter)
Description: This fire-lizard is mostly a smooth, very dark brown in color, lightening to tan along the extremities of his talons, headknobs, and backridges. His wingsails are a lovely dark tan, as is a little dash along his eyeridges (making his eyes look lined, but also giving them a sly effect). Alternately, the tip of his tail darkens to black, like he must have dipped it in an inkwell.
He is massive for his size, looking easily much older than he is at hatching. He will continue to grow in this manner, becoming just shy of the size of the average bronze. The majority of his mass is in his bulky body, giving him a very definite center of gravity. His limbs are rather disproportionately skinny and will have a hard time holding his massive body steady. Due to this, he has a terrible sense of balance and will not be able to walk or fly in a straight line very well. To combat this, his firm center of gravity allows him to have excellent agility – turning his tumbles and swerves into almost a twisting dance that, while comical, seems almost intentionally so.
Personality: This big brown fire-lizard seems to almost have a screw loose, but in the most comical of ways. He has a quirky sense of humor and will love to make people laugh. Well aware of his poor balance – and quite okay with that – he will willingly tip himself off a ledge and then right himself in a flurry of mid-air movement just to get a laugh. Or for a lark on his own part, even if he doesn’t think anyone else is watching. He’s not very good at being still – unless he’s contentedly curled up with his bonded getting some petting-affection – and will be very hard to keep track of despite his size. When he finds some tidbit of information that he finds ‘important,’ the first person to know must always be his bonded, irregardless of what His is doing at that moment. He will manage to curl about his bonded’s neck, get in front of her face, grab her cheeks with his paws, put his forehead to hers in a way he can look in her eyes (while likely making her cross-eyed), and solemnly cheep as he relays the message mentally. …His idea of ‘important,’ however…isn’t always what other people might consider so, and it might even be something readily known already. It could be that the staff is making wherry stew, or it could be that there are things attacking people in the field.
His natural curiosity will get him into boundless amounts of trouble, though nothing serious. If it exists and can be gotten into, he will get into it at some point. Don’t be surprised to one day pick up a rolled bandage from a basket of them and find under it a little brown head that will chirp at you innocently. And if a pot gets upset in the kitchens, it’s not a stretch that you might see this one flying around covered in noodles for a bit. If a lady’s shriek is heard, finding this one toting around a breastband or a pair of knickers isn’t out of the question. If ever this one goes missing, first check any drawers or cabinets nearby, as that’s likely where he’ll be found. It might be a good idea to lock anything containing substances that shouldn’t be consumed, as well, for he’ll eat – or at least gnaw on – pretty much anything that looks remotely like ‘food.’
Not the least bit vain, this brown doesn’t really care anything for appearances. As long as he’s healthy, he doesn’t care if he’s clean or dirty. His bulk is easily dealt with due to his agility, and he doesn’t really have any issues with his massive body or his shorter limbs. He is definitely one to judge people on the actions he observes – as well as any emotions he can pick up from them – more than what they look like at all. Children and elderly, men and women, beautiful and ugly – he doesn’t care. The only thing that will change that is if his bonded feels strongly toward someone in a way that’s different from his first impression – whether the feeling is negative or positive.
