K‘vin was a little bit disoriented, what with Asileth constantly chanting: K‘vinmine, K‘vinmine! Feed Asileth please K‘vinmine? and the chaos of everyone feeding their new dragons. He was in the middle of reassuring Asileth, that yes, he would feed her and yes, it would be soon, when he heard Kheron – no, K‘ron probably – shout out to him. His face broke out into a grin and he led Asileth to K‘ron and his brown to feed her. Asileth was happy to comply, with the prospect of food and meeting that brown exciting her.
Before he started talking to K‘ron, K‘vin finally started feeding his little green who hungrily gobbled down the meat. When Asileth wasn‘t starving anymore, only hungry, K‘vin looked at K‘ron and beamed. „Yes it‘s K‘vin now, are you K‘ron? Can you believe that it actually happened! We impressed!“ His large eyes where shining in excitement and he just couldn‘t stop smiling. „Your brown is very handsome, isn‘t his name Calzanth?“ He thought that was the name K‘ron had shouted out but he wasn‘t entirely sure. He looked fondly at Asileth, who showed no signs of slowing down her meat consumption, and then back at K‘ron. „Her name is Asileth.“ His voice was full of love and happiness for Asileth and his eyes wandered again too her. The new weyrling was unable to take his eyes off his love for a long period of time.
Wasn‘t it just wonderful that Calzanth‘s and Hers seemed to be friends? That was good because Asileth had a really good feeling about Calzanth. Hello. My name is Asileth and you are Calzanth. I like you. Do you like me? Yours and Mine are friends, do you want to be friends too? Asileth wasn‘t that interested in talking to the other dragonets but she really wanted to be with Calzanth now.

Well your mind can be set at ease, dearest. He doesn‘t have a firelizard. F‘ren felt through their connection how pleased Eneth was and smiled faintly. He was starting to get used to his dragon‘s hate of firelizards and it didn‘t bother him as much as it had at first. Eneth‘s feelings always came before F‘ren‘s feelings.
Why Eneth didn‘t like firelizards? Oh he‘d thought about time and time again and talked with Eneth about it but the only thing that the bronze could say to explain was that they were annoying. Plain and simple. "Honestly, I have no idea why he‘s like this. Most dragons I know enjoy their little cousins but not my Eneth. The only reason I can think of is that maybe a firelizard attacked his egg or something. I always wanted one for myself but after impressing Eneth that‘s ruled out. I don‘t care that much anymore, I‘d much rather have Eneth than a thousand firelizards." F‘ren‘s nauseating grin was in place as always when he talked about Eneth but suddenly it changed into a frown. How could he be so inconsiderate? Here he was babbling about how great Eneth was, probably rubbing salt in the candidate’s wounds. Ranen probably didn’t need a reminder that he didn’t have a dragon of his own.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to talk so much about Eneth. It’s just that… Well… He dominates my thoughts so much you know?” F’ren could kick himself. Of course Ranen didn’t know. He’s welcome to come to me and oil me if he wants to be with a dragon, F’renmine. Eneth offered, excited to meet this new friend of His now that it had been established that one of them wouldn’t accompany him.
F’ren peered worriedly at Ranen, who to the weyrling’s relief didn’t seem to be that bothered, but you never knew. “Eneth says he wants to meet you, but I’m afraid the offer isn’t quite unselfish. He wants you to oil him.”

The next egg that hatched was the one that Kivin had spent considerable time with during the touching so he started focusing on that egg. A beautiful little green emerged but Kivin didn‘t have much hope for impressing that one. For one thing greens tended to pick girls more often and also, no dragon seemed to want to pick Kivin. He had been following the brown with one eye while watching the other dragonets hatch and impress and was, as many others were, growing increasingly worried about the young hatchling. He was therefore pleased when the green started to help her clutch brother to find a candidate.
His attention was diverted from the green and the brown when the last egg hatched. Out came, well there could be no denying it, a dragonet that wasn‘t very beautiful. However Kivin didn‘t care. To him the blue was beautiful and he urged the little dragonet in his mind to come to him. Kivin focused again on the brown when he mauled first two girls and then a boy. Kivin winced, it seemed that the brown was having a less than smooth hatching. But then the brown finally impressed, like five others before him. The green with her task completed, started searching for Hers but much more calmly than the brown had. She started walking in Kivin‘s direction who started hoping again even though he knew that she would never pick him. But nearer she came and Kivin started holding his breath in anticipation. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing and was very calm so Kivin hoped that meant that she wouldn‘t maul him.
And she didn‘t. Instead she leaned against his legs and all doubt was erased from Kivin‘s mind. He was good enough to bond with a dragon, even one as beautiful as his Asileth. Asileth is sorry she took so long, K’vinmine, but don’t be sad anymore! Your Asileth is here now, don’t worry. Please, feed Asileth? [/i] Kivin, no, K‘vin started sniffling, he just couldn‘t help that he was crying. He had never felt more happy, more whole than in this moment. Finally he understood what riders were always talking about. He sank down to his knees to put his arms around Asileth and hugged her like his life depended on it. I‘m not sad anymore Asileth and we‘ll go now to get you fed. True to his word, K‘vin let go of his green and led her out of the sands to fill that empty dragonet stomach, a blinding smile on his face.

F‘ren was alarmed when his cheerful, occasionally blushing, companion stopped grinning and looked like he could hit himself. Before the weyrling could ask what was wrong however, Ranen cleared it up. Well he was relieved that that was all it was, he had been beginning to think that there was something wrong. He really wasn‘t offended that Ranen hadn‘t asked about Eneth before but it was nice that he was asking about his dragon now. After all every rider loved talking about his dragon, especially weyrlings, and F‘ren was no exception, beaming with pride and love as he talked about Eneth. "That‘s all right really. His name is Eneth and he‘s the loveliest bronze in the Weyr. Granted he‘s not that big for a bronze but he‘s much more agile than those big, dull bronzes.“ F‘ren couldn‘t help emphasizing when he said bronze, it was a fact as far as F‘ren was concerned that bronzes were simply the best color. Not counting the golds of course. "He sleeps alot but occasionally decides to grace my mind with his presence. In fact I think he‘s waking up now!“
Eneth was indeed waking up and F‘ren grinned again when his mind connected with the now awake bronze. Well you‘re finally awake He greeted Eneth warmly. Yes Mine. Who is the dragonless one that you are talking to? Does he have a firelizard? Of course it was most important to his dragon if Ranen had one of those pesky little creatures. F‘ren answered Eneth aloud. "His name is Ranen and he‘s a candidate. Eneth asks if you have a firelizard? Eneth would prefer if you didn't. He doesn't like those lovely little creatures." F'ren sighed. It would certainly be easier if Ranen didn't have a firelizard because his dragon tended to dislike and mistrust people who had bonded with a firelizard and F'ren really did not want Eneth to try to drive Ranen away just when he was getting to know him.

Well she seemed happy to see him, which was good. At least she hadn‘t forgotten about him. No one could forget you F‘renmine Eneth was quick to assure him and F‘ren laughed out loud at his dragon‘s reassurance, which he hadn‘t really needed. I know. I‘m unforgettable He answered smugly. Realizing that Rael didn‘t know why he was laughing, he composed himself. „Sorry, I was talking to Eneth. You know how it is.“ She had probably been in Cerulean long enough to not take offense when a rider‘s attention went to his dragon in the middle of a conversation, but you never knew.
Her firelizard seemed less hostile than the last time he had seen them, which was good because last time he had acted like F‘ren was going to hurt Rael or something. Granted the firelizard had been beginning to warm up to F‘ren a little bit but he seemed even more relaxed now and F‘ren wondered why. „So it seems like your little Tydus doesn‘t hate me anymore. Why the change?“ Eneth for his part was slightly disgruntled by how much F‘ren thought about one of those things. Why should you care what some pesky firelizard thinks Mine? They are stupid. F‘ren rolled his eyes, his dragon‘s irrational dislike of firelizards was starting to get tiring. I know they‘re not anywhere near as smart as you are, my dear Eneth, but they‘re fun nonetheless and it‘s nice talking to Rael when Tydus isn‘t glaring at me. Eneth didn‘t answer, but F‘ren felt Eneth‘s reluctant acceptance, for now...
F‘ren did notice Rael blushing, but he brushed it off. He was used to people blushing at things he said. Like Ranen. At Rael‘s mention of his bowing abilities, F‘ren grinned. “Oh, I’m a man of a quite a few surprises Raelwyn.” An outrageous wink followed before he had the time to think about it. Oh, shards. F’ren hadn’t been meaning to say it so flirty. He had already decided that Rael should be a friend nothing more. At least yet. But flirting was what he did around attractive women, sometimes even men, he just couldn’t help himself. He quickly moved back in friend mode. “I think you should think about studying music more sometime if you have the opportunity. A talent like yours deserves to be honed.” F’ren told Rael earnestly and quickly moved to the next glow to change it. He would like to finish this chore as soon as possible.

F’ren had been doing dock work and was just about finished when the humming started. Unfortunately he was almost as far from the sands as you could be. But this was not something the weyrling wanted to miss and he quickly abandoned his task and started running. He really did not want to be late to the first hatching in a long time he had been to without adorning the white candidate robe. A few minutes later and he was gasping for breath, but full of relief because he was almost there. He put his hands on his hips while catching his breath but froze in the act. He was naked from the waist up. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, F’ren was used to being shirtless and dock work was hot work, but this was a hatching. It was sort of expected that everyone should dress up and he knew that no shirt would never be accepted. He feared that the queen would think that he was disrespecting the eggs and he definitely did not want to be on her bad side, especially on a day like this when emotions ran high. Well it couldn’t be helped, he would have to run all the way to the weyrlings’ weyr to put on a shirt.
A number of minutes later and F’ren was dripping sweat into his new, clean shirt. The good news was that he was finally there. He spotted his fellow weyrlings fairly easily and quickly went to them. When he reached them he bowed down with his hands on his knees and gasped for breath. Running up and down all those stairs was not easy. When the worst was over, he straightened up and tried to see what had been going on. “What has happened? Anything interesting?” He asked no one in particular.
He noted with disappointment that it was almost over as there were only two eggs that hadn’t hatched yet. But one hatched brown seemed to be reluctant to impress, and was instead staying close to Trith. Someone seemed to be hurt and when F’ren saw who it was his hand flew to his mouth in horror. Not Rael… Thankfully her wounds didn’t seem to be very serious but you never knew. His attention was at the moment focused on Rael but not the remaining eggs or the brown.
--//--
It seemed like everyone was impressing but him. None of the new dragons paid any attention to him and he couldn’t blame them, he knew he was a fairly unnoticeable boy. But that didn’t change the fact that it felt like his heart was breaking every time a dragonet was lead out of the sands by an ecstatic new weyrling. Why did none of them want him? Was he really that weak that no dragon could imagine bonding with him?
A small bright spot was when Kheron impressed. Kivin actually managed to be genuinely happy for his friend who was beaming with happiness. Kivin couldn’t say that he blamed him. When a girl, Raelwyn, was hurt, the healer in him wanted to rush over and tend to her but the candidate in him made him stay put, knowing that there were other people there to tend to her injuries and it was more important that he stay put, if he wanted to have any hope of impressing. Although hope was slim now, with only three dragons left.

He could feel his face getting hot and he knew he was blushing. Kivin sighed with annoyance at himself. He hated how often he blushed when most of the time he knew he really didn‘t have any reason to. Like now, when a new person started talking to him. But it wasn‘t just any person, there was something about this boy that made him nervous. „Kivin and yes, I‘m a candidate.“ He looked up when answering L‘mar careful to but quickly looked down again to focus on his task. Despite what he‘d heard before about L‘mar, the weyrling really did seem like a nice person and he did want to talk to him more but he wasn‘t quite yet comfortable enough with him.
Kheron, he was comfortable with however. It had been nice to get to know him when Kheron had been practicing archery with H‘seo but then there had been peace and quiet but it was very different here in the hustle and bustle of the kitchen and Kivin was thankful for that they had already moved past the awkward introduction stage or it would probably have been just as hard for him talking Kheron as it seemed to be with L‘mar. He could even do small talk with Kheron. „How is your little beauty, Yumi, doing?

Kivin walked slowly to the candidate barracks. His chores were over and he looked forward to get a little rest and meet Toll, who had not been allowed to go with him. He was almost there when he started to hear humming. He froze and listened as the humming gradually became stronger. When he heard Trith summon them, he knew for sure that eggs were finally hatching. He realized that he was just standing there doing nothing and promptly ran as fast as he could the short distance he had left to the barracks.
When he entered he was immediately ambushed by a screaming brown firelizard. Toll was out of control with excitement and Kivin had to spend several minutes trying to get him to calm down. Finally Toll managed to settle down on Kivin‘s shoulder, trembling with excitement, and Kivin hummed soothingly. He tried to stress the importance of Toll staying in the barracks and the firelizard reluctantly understood after a while.
Kivin put his firelizard down, sighing with relief, and rushed to get undressed. He had wasted valuable minutes with Toll and he really didn‘t want to be late. He put the simple white robe on and the sandals. It was as well that they were allowed sandals, the sands were hot. When he left, Toll made one final try to follow him but a stern look from His was enough to settle him down.
Fortunately Kivin had taken to route the hatching sands so often that he could probably get there with closed eyes. S‘lain had advised him too memorize the quickest route and Kivin had dutifully done so. It was just as well because Kivin‘s mind was all over the place and his feet moved of their own accord.
When he got to the sands he lined up with the other candidates and then followed V‘mio who placed them in a semi-circle. It was then, while waiting for the eggs to hatch, that he finally thought about what was going on. Before nothing had existed in his mind other than getting to the sands as fast as possible but now his heart thumped in nervous excitement. This could either be the best day of his life or the worst. He wasn‘t sure if he could deal with rejection when all his time at the Weyr had been spent readying himself for this day and for getting a dragon.
The Puntius egg was moving and Kivin fixed his eyes on it, hoping that this dragonet would choose him.

Kivin whooped and laughed in glee when Kheron didn‘t disappoint. He wished he had a talent like Kheron but the only thing that Kivin was good at really was healing. He really missed healing but he didn‘t know how to make himself useful here. Especially since his specialty was a pretty useless form of healing. Or so had the other boys said a number of times. But it didn‘t matter, he knew that he really should go to the infirmary and ask if they needed him for something but both shyness and the fact that Kivin had enough to deal with trying to settle into the Weyr had prevented him from doing so. „Yes, I did enjoy healing very much.“ Only not the company there, he added silently. „My specialty is massage, but I‘m fairly good at the useful stuff too.“
The confirmation that Kheron also had a firelizard pleased Kivin because that meant it would be easier, for Kivin at least, to talk to Kheron, knowing they had something in common other than being candidates. „Yumi, that‘s a beautiful name,“ he said earnestly. „And yes, the brown is mine. His name is Toll and we‘ve been together for six turns now. But I have no idea where he is now.“ Kivin frowned slightly, uncomfortable with being away from his closest friend for a long time. „For how long have you had Yumi?“
Kivin nodded in understanding at H‘seo, unsure what to say. He knew that what happened in Silver Cove must have hit the surviving riders hard and the last thing he wanted to do was to remind H‘seo of it. He was saved from answering when Toll finally appeared in the air above him.
The firelizard flew to Kivin and settled on his shoulder, chirping excitedly. Disoriented scenes appeared in Kivin‘s mind of Toll bathing and socializing with a number of dragons and other firelizards. When Toll was done telling Kivin about his day, he glided to the ground and strutted to H‘seo. He stopped in front of the rider, standing proudly, and waited for H‘seo to pay attention to him. Kivin smiled softly at his firelizard‘s antics. „And that‘s Toll. He thinks he is very important and will expect you to treat him like he is.“

When you impress, S‘lain had said. The rider seemed sure that a dragon would choose Kivin on hatching day. He felt flattered at the older man‘s trust in him, but at the same time couldn‘t help feeling that if he didn‘t impress, he would be letting S‘lain down in some way. And the chance of disappointing S‘lain, the only person he knew here, horrified the candidate.
Feline danger... Kivin felt that he should be more alarmed than he was but the truth was that he just didn‘t care at the moment. He had much bigger fears now, like about the fact that they were finally here, at the candidate barracks, and S‘lain was leaving him. He racked his brain for questions to ask the rider, so he would stay longer, but found that his mind, so full of questions before, was now empty. It would be easier if only Toll was here, then he wouldn‘t feel so alone in the world.
Toll, sensing His distress, immediately appeared to settle on Kivin‘s shoulder. The firelizard crooned softly in the short boy‘s ear and made, as he had so often done in the past, Kivin feel safe and confident. Kivin smiled feebly at S‘lain. "No. No questions. Thank you for, um, being so kind to me." He really wanted to hug S‘lain now, but real men didn‘t do such things so Kivin instead turned his back to S‘lain and walked away from him, to get settled into his new life.
[And Kivin and Toll bow out.]

To say that F‘ren was surprised was an understatement. But he quickly recovered, he guessed it was normal for a hold bred person to be hesitant about his sexuality. He‘d seen it before, bisexual or homosexual people that came from holds either didn‘t waste any time in exploring new possibilities when arriving in the Weyr or their upbringing stifled them and they were too afraid. Ranen belonged to second group it seemed. Well, it was slightly disappointing and F‘ren would just have to ask someone else. It was not like there was any shortage of people to ask in the Weyr.
Ranen seemed embarrassed by his admission, and F‘ren couldn‘t really blame him to be honest, but he didn’t want his new friend to feel too[/] uncomfortable and he guessed he had pushed Ranen enough for one day. “Oh well, that’s a shards shame but I guess you can’t help it, my blushing friend.” His voice was teasing, but gentle, to let Ranen know that he didn’t think less of him. Much that is. But the candidate wasn’t getting off the hook so easily and the weyrling was already racking his brain for boys to introduce to Ranen, a calculating look on his face. It was F’ren’s new goal in life to rescue Ranen from his blushing virgin status.
Well, a change of subject was in order. Now what could he talk about that was safe and didn’t make Ranen blush? Dragons was a pretty safe subject, and always interesting. Dragons it was. “So, any special color wish? And don’t say you don’t mind what color. That’s boring.” He grinned to let Ranen know he was kidding and at the same time felt a stirring at the edge of his consciousness, it seemed that Eneth would wake up soon.

Let‘s be here all day. Here, meaning the beach that F‘ren and Eneth were currently on. While I would love to spend time with you Mine, M‘ma won‘t be happy if you skip chores. Eneth‘s voice was laced with amusement but also honest regret at having to lose his bonded. The bronze dragon preferred F‘ren to spend all his time with Eneth, unfortunately his bonded one was still a lowly weyrling and had to do chores all the time. F‘ren cursed and jumped up. Of course he needed to go but he was changing glows today and he hated that task. He hadn‘t been planning to shirk his duty, not really, but it had been nice to dream of a nice, lazy day with Eneth. He put his arms around Eneth‘s neck and hugged his dragon tightly. Stay with me? Eneth knew that his bonded meant in mind, not presence, and promised His that he would.
F‘ren knew he had wasted enough time already and started running to the Great Hall, his dragon‘s comfortable presence in his mind. He assumed that the other ones that would be working with him would start there and he preferred company while doing this dull chore.
When he arrived in the Hall he noticed with glee that Raelwyn was also changing glows today. He hadn‘t met her again since the arrival of the eggs and he regretted that. He didn‘t even know her that much as a result of their limited time together but he already knew that Rael was a person that he wanted to know better. He started to call out to her before he heard that he was singing. F‘ren slowed down and walked slowly and quietly to Rael so he wouldn‘t disturb her. He really had no idea that Rael had such a good voice, he loved listening to her and he stopped before reaching her, just listening to the beautiful melody. After a while he knew that he had to start working and took the last few steps towards Rael and Tydus. "Good day Rael," this was followed by an outrageous bow. "And good day to you, handsome Tydus." An even more outrageous bow. "Seems like we will be changing glows together today." He grinned at Rael. Maybe glow changing wouldn‘t be so bad today. "And I have to complement you on your voice, I had no idea you could sing so beautifully. You, my dear Rael, are full of surprises."

Kivin stroked the brown hide of his firelizard that was currently nestled in the candidate‘s lap. Toll was sound asleep and Kivin regretted having to disturb his companion but duty called. Kitchen duty to be exact. He hadn‘t had to work in the Kitchens before and was slightly anxious, as he was always before new situations. He really hoped that someone he knew was also working in the Kitchens, that would make it easier. Not that he knew many in the Weyr. Maybe he would get to know someone new today. He hoped the people he would be working with would be quiet and easygoing but not shy. Kivin was shy enough for two people. But it didn‘t do to postpone the invitable and he gently eased his hands underneath Toll to pick the brown up and put him down in Kivin‘s cot. The firelizard opened one eye lazily at the disturbance but then he was asleep again. Lucky boy, Kivin thought and reluctantly made his way to the kitchens.
He timidly made his way through the hustle and bustle in the Kitchens to the woman he recognized as the Head Cook. He somehow managed to stammer up his name and reason for being here and was gently steered towards another boy with the instructions to also chop ingredients for the stew like the boy that had already arrived. Kivin walked very hesitantly towards the boy. He knew him by reputation only but the weyrling‘s reputation as a troublemaker was enough to make Kivin balk at the thought of having to work with him. It was a small relief to Kivin that the boy wasn‘t all that tall, but he was still tall enough to look down on Kivin, as a large majority of people were able to do.
He silently took his place near L‘mar and started to chop, keeping his head down. He really hoped that the weyrling wouldn‘t bother him, or worse, prank him. It would be nice however to talk to him but the small boy didn‘t dare to speak up first. Kivin had been so focused on L‘mar that he hadn‘t noticed right away that Kheron was also in the Kitchens. But when he did, the candidate immediately relaxed. Kheron he knew, his fellow candidate was nice and Kivin wasn‘t so shy around him anymore. He smiled brightly at Kheron before going back to chopping, he didn‘t want to interrupt the conversation between Kheron and L‘mar.

F‘ren laughed lightly when he saw Ranen blushing at his question. It seemed the candidate hadn‘t managed to get rid of holdbred prudishness yet. When Ranen finally managed to admit that he was bisexual, F’ren grinned. “Wow. I’m jealous you know. I’ve always wanted to enjoy women and men equally. Think of all the possibilities!” He shook his head grinning and thought of all the possibilities. If he’d get bored of one gender, he could just move on to the other one for a while. He could also like everyone, no matter the gender, and that would mean twice as many people to choose from. He studied Ranen intently, the candidate wasn’t so bad looking and he could see the appeal in being with someone of the same gender but he had to admit that the smooth curves of women excited him far more.
“I can only imagine, I don’t think that I would ever have been able to adjust to hold life.” F’ren shuddered to even think of being doomed to live a boring and repetitive life in a hold. He suddenly remembered that he had been dying of hunger only a few minutes ago and looked down at his nearly untouched roll. He took a few bites and swallowed them with some klah before turning his attention back to Ranen.
“So what’s it like? Being with a guy I mean. Is it very different from a girl?” F’ren couldn’t help but try to satisfy his curiosity. It had been a longtime fantasy of his to experiment with a guy, but to be honest F’ren wasn’t nearly ready for that yet. But it didn’t hurt to do some research. It didn’t even occur to him that Ranen could be a virgin. F’ren thought that the candidate was about the same age as him and being in a Weyr for two years probably meant that he had had numerous bed partners. After all, F’ren couldn’t imagine not taking advantage of Weyr freedom after being cooped up so long in a hold.
