That Kheron didn‘t know anyone either pleased Kivin. It just seemed easier somehow that they were both in need of friend. He seemed as embarrassed about it as Kivin was and looked like he was shy – like Kivin. Happy that they allowed him to stay, Kivin moved to stand beside Kheron, careful to not be in his way.
Kivin observed with interest when H’seo aimed carefully and then shot the arrow. When the arrow landed, Kivin released a breath that he didn’t know he had been holding in anticipation and looked smiling at the rider who also seemed happy with his shot. Then Kheron took the bow and Kivin silently whished that his arrow would beat H’seo’s. It wasn’t that he didn’t like the bluerider, he seemed really pleasant, it was just that this was young vs. old and Kivin really wanted his fellow candidate to best a grown rider.
Realizing that Kheron had asked him a question, Kivin ducked his head a little in embarrassment for not having answered straight away. “I grew up in Silver Cove Hold but I’ve been in the Healer Hall for the past four years. I arrived here not so long ago, when S’lain and Jaxith searched me.” He smiled fondly at the memory.
“What about you? Don’t you have a firelizard? A green right? What’s her name?” He had often seen a green beauty in the barracks and he knew that Toll had too. Toll wasn’t nearly as shy as his bonded and probably knew all the dragons and firelizards in the Weyr already. Speaking of Toll, where was that sharding firelizard anyway? Kivin was starting to miss him.
Remembering H’seo, Kivin turned to him, not wanting to ignore the rider. “How long have you been in a Weyr?” He couldn’t help that his voice was quieter when talking to H’seo. He just felt more at ease with his peers. Adults intimidated him, especially men because they sometimes reminded him of his father.

Hi there, I know I've been absent for the past days but the thing is that my normal day goes like this: work, exercise, spend time with family, sleep. It's temporary - me working so much, and things should be getting to normal now.
But I have to got to the capital for a week with my family because my grandmother has an operation and could be dying depending on the outcome. Maybe I'll find time to post while there, but I wouldn't count on it.
So sorry for leaving threads hanging but I'll be back (hopefully) in a week.

F‘ren nodded in understanding at the candidate, it was understandable that he didn‘t want to talk now. After all they‘d just met. F‘ren was a little surprised at himself for having offered advice. He normally wasn‘t the person people went to when they needed to talk and he wasn‘t that good at giving advice. But this was a special case, F‘ren had been in nearly the exact same position before so he should be able to help.
The weyrling was happy when Ranen changed the topic to a happier note. He was the cheerful type and didn‘t like long serious conversations much. "Growing up in the Weyr? Honestly I don‘t know how life is outside the Weyr so I can‘t compare. But for example, I‘m your typical weyrbrat. Born from a greenflight, raised by a kitchen worker. I‘ve never had a real family like you have." He supposed that would seem sad to some people, but F‘ren spoke of it in a matter of fact way. He had gone trough a brief phase when he was little when he wished that his parents were together and that he lived with them. Then he had wised up and realized that having no parents meant more freedom and more fun.
"Also, judging by some of the holdbred people I‘ve met, weyrbred people have more fun. The freedom in the Weyrs is awesome don‘t you think?" He grinned lewdly at Ranen, hoping the candidate would understand him. "Not to mention, have you noticed that people in Weyrs are generally better looking than holdpeople?" He nodded his head towards a pretty young woman on a nearby table, an old conquest of his. "Or are you perhaps more interested in flat chests and muscles?" He wondered how the candidate would respond to this topic. You never knew with those holdbred ones, even if they had lived in a Weyr for a while.

Kivin was relieved when his greeting, and everyone‘s, seemed to please the goldpair. He bowed again in thanks before he went close to the eggs. They all fascinated him and he wandered around, observing each egg closely before going to the next. He found the difference in the color of the eggs interesting and wondered if the outward appearance had something to do with the color of the dragons inside.
All around him, other candidates where touching the eggs, sometimes talking to them also. He looked around him, trying to decide which egg to go to. One egg, the Xiphophorus Egg, caught his eye. It wasn’t as flashy as the other eggs and Kivin had seen no one approach it. It was really big and would probably hatch a bronze or a brown. The egg leaned against the smaller Splendens Egg, and he wondered what that meant. Could the dragons in the eggs bond before hatching? He sat down beside the egg, ignoring the heat, and put both his hands on the egg. It felt warm under his fingers and Kivin caressed the egg lightly, his fingers stroking the mostly yellow shell. He traced the orange spots with a smile and then closed his eyes, just letting himself feel the moment.
After a while the hot sands were getting unbearable and Kivin decided to get to know the Splendens Egg. This time he kneeled in the sands, his bottom not ready for more sitting. This egg was much more colorful than its neighbor and Kivin spent a long moment just observing the egg. This egg was medium-sized and maybe held a big green or a blue. As Kivin wanted a blue, he really wanted to get acquainted with this egg, although he didn’t know if it mattered in a Hatching whether he had touched the egg before or not. He put one hand on the egg, not stroking it but just connecting with the egg.

F’ren whistled inwardly, he knew that families in Holds were often very large, but the weyrbred young man still thought that seven children was a lot. He winced in sympathy when the candidate told him that he’d been a candidate for two turns. He was all too familiar with the hardships of being a candidate for such a long time. Being a candidate for nearly six years had nearly ruined the weyrling and he was relieved beyond words that that time in his life was over.
F’ren laughed humorlessly at Ranen’s question and forced a smile. It still hurt to think about it. “Was it hard? I was a candidate for six years you know. First four years at Southern, then two at Silver Cove but I finally impressed my Eneth when I came here. Both my parents were riders, and my father a bronze one to the boot, so people expected me to impress. I always felt I was failing them somehow and I thought that I must have been doing something wrong. Or that maybe I was just inadequate and that no dragon would ever want me. But it turns out that I was just waiting for the right one.” He smiled a comforting smile to Ranen. “So I really do understand what you must be going through. Just don’t give up hope. And if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m your man.”

Kivin relaxed completely when S'lain put his hand on the candidate's shoulder. There was just something so comforting about the rider and he always seemed to know what to say to the shy boy. And just by him telling Kivin that he would show him to the barracks, a small weight was lifted of his shoulders.
"The climb will be no problem," Kivin assured the rider. He was used to exercise and his stamina was very good. He enjoyed the climb, which was made especially enjoyable, not to mention useful, by S'lain who pointed out the important things. Kivin never said anything other than humming in response, and instead paid attention to S'lain and his surroundings and made sure to memorize the really important stuff. Everything was fascinating and the candidate felt slightly overwhelmed.
It gave Kivin an immense sense of security, to be able to go to S'lain whenever he needed to, and he was immensely grateful to the older man. He knew he would take the rider up on the offer sometime. It was important to always have someone to go to, especially for someone as insecure as Kivin. If people here were only half as nice as S'lain, Kivin knew he would have no problems. He had a feeling that it wouldn't be long until they would reach the candidate barracks and then Kivin would lose his security blanket and instead would have to socialize with entirely new people. "Are there many candidates already S'lain?" He hoped there weren't. Fewer candidates meant it would be easier to adjust and a greater chance of impressing.

Kivin outright beamed at Kheron. It was very nice to know that he wasn't entirely unnoticeable and that Kheron actually knew his name. He nodded shyly in response and bit his lip to try to stop his foolish grinning. The fact that it was actually Kheron who was the better archer surprised Kivin and he regarded his fellow candidate with the respect. When he'd first arrived, he'd assumed that the older one was tutoring Kheron, but apparently it was the rider that needed tutoring more.
The fact that the rider was bonded to a blue dragon made Kivin like him more because ever since he had been searched by a blue dragon, Kivin had liked them most out of all the dragons and he had to admit that he hoped to impress a blue the most of all the colors. He smiled shyly at H'seo.
When he was offered the bow, Kivin's eyes widened and he took a step back and held his hands in front of him as to try to protect himself from the bow. "I really think that me shooting from a bow would end disastrously," Kivin said embarrassed. "I wouldn't even know what to do, but if it doesn't bother you, are you okay with me watching you?"

F‘ren was beginning to think that he‘d offended the boy so much that he didn‘t want to shake F‘ren‘s hand, but then the boy finally took the weyrling‘s offered hand. He even gave him a smile, so F‘ren was pretty sure that he was in the clear. Four brothers? F‘ren didn‘t even have one, that he knew of that is, but it was very likely that he had some half-siblings running around in Southern. F‘ren was intrigued by this boy who actually had a family, a foreign concept to the weyrbred boy.
„Well that‘s good to know but I‘m normally not this crude. I promise!“ His image was very important to F‘ren and he really didn‘t want Ranen to think that F‘ren acted like an underfed drudge all the time. „So, four brothers? No sisters then? You‘re a candidate right? Do you miss your family a lot?“ In F‘ren‘s experience, holdbred candidates often had a difficult time when they first arrived in a Weyr, so it seemed like a reasonable question.

It was just so liberating to run, Kivin thought. He could do it all day if he only had the stamina. Although his stamina now was pretty impressive. He also loved to run barefoot in the sand, he loved the feeling of sand slipping between his toes. Currently he was in fact running on the beach, his chores for the day done so he had nothing better to do. Toll... Well his firelizard was nowhere to be seen and Kivin had no idea where the brown was at. Probably socializing with the numerous firelizards and dragons in the Weyr. Toll loved weyrlife and had adjusted immediately. If only Kivin could say the same. He had been here for a while but he still didn't feel settled in yet. A big contributing factor to that, was that Kivin didn't really know anybody. His incredibly shy nature overcame his longing to make friends and he hadn't yet found the courage to take the first step and strike up a conversation with somebody. So far his life in Cerulean consisted of doing chores, eating, sleeping and taking care of Toll. He shared a living space with his fellow candidates but that was it, he was sure they didn't even notice him most of the time.
He had been so lost in thought that he didn't see the people ahead or hear them until he had almost arrived beside them. Kivin stopped in his tracks and observed with curiosity that they seemed to be practicing to shoot a bow. But Kivin thought that they looked like they didn't need much practice, both seemed very skilled, judging by the placement of the arrows. Kivin recognized one of them as Kheron, who was a candidate too. He didn't know who the older man was. Kivin had often almost started talking to Kheron but had always chickened out. The other boy looked like he was shy too and didn't have any friends either, Kivin was almost sure of that. But now he was almost breathing down their necks and he knew they must have noticed him, so it would be silly to just run away from them.
"Wow, you're really good," he said quietly, surprising himself with the ability to speak up. Maybe they would let him watch them practice, Kivin certainly couldn't take part in it, he'd never even held a bow before.

F'ren was in a good mood. He had just had a delightful time with Eneth. The pair had gone to the beach and after they had splashed in the ocean they had enjoyed a nice sunbath together. It was his favorite pastime to tan with Eneth but all good things must end sometime and F'ren hadn't been able to ignore the cries of his stomach anymore. He had regretfully left Eneth, who was fast asleep, and hurried to the kitchens. He had been so hungry that as soon as he got a meat roll he had bitten a large chunk out of it, before he had even begun to think about where he should sit. He nodded to some people he recognized in the Hall but he wanted to sit with someone new. He loved meeting new people and the last time he had eaten with someone he hadn't talked to before, it had turned out wonderfully, resulting in F'ren recruiting help for washing Eneth. The only thing he regretted was that the clutch had arrived shortly after they met so their time together had been cut short.
Well there was nothing big happening today that he knew of and this time the weyrling was determined to make a new friend. He looked around and immediately walked up to the first stranger he saw. F'ren decided that the plain boy who sat alone at the table against the wall looked lonely and it didn't even occur to him that he would object to the bronze weyrling sitting with him. He sat down on the other side of the table and put his cup of klah down and took another large bite of his roll. He just couldn't help himself, he was hungry! Unfortunately it had been a rather big bite and F'ren knew that it would be very unflattering if he tried talking with his mouth full. He chewed and chewed, trying to empty his mouth as fast as possible. The weyrling kept his eyes on his companion and tried apologize for his bad manners with his eyes. Finally he managed to swallow everything and he outstretched his hand to the boy and smiled. "Hello, I'm F'ren and I'm so sorry for the earlier display. I was just so hungry and well, you know how it is?"

Kivin and Toll had been enjoying a moment of relaxation by dozing in the candidate barracks together, Kivin lying on his back and Toll sleeping comfortably on his chest. When the call from the queen came, boy and firelizard immediately jumped out of bed. It wouldn't do to be late to the event the candidate had looked forward too since the eggs arrived a sevenday ago. Kivin hurriedly tried to smooth his clothes that were a bit rumpled, but didn't succeed. His condition wasn't too bad and he really didn't have time to change and Toll was making him deaf with his impatient cries.
Kivin ran as fast as his feet would take him to the sands but slowed down to a more respectable pace when he was almost there. Kivin wasn't entirely sure what was proper etiquette when attending a touching but he imagined it was important to be respectful to Trith. Being on the queen's bad side would surely close many doors such as impressing a dragon. He tried to convey to his brown firelizard the importance of behaving on the sands but there was no need as Toll seemed to realize that by himself and was, as he was often, on Kivin's shoulder and for the occasion Toll was still but alert.
As the candidate approached the Weyrwoman and her gold he felt very anxious. He dreaded having to speak up and endure their scrutiny and a small part of him wanted to run away and hide from the formidable gold dragon. Kivin squared his shoulders determined. This was something that had to be done and the smart part of his brain knew that they would never harm him unless he did something very wrong like breaking an egg or something. As he had no intention of harming the eggs, he thought he was safe. Relief washed over Kivin when he saw that a fellow candidate, Kheron, had already arrived and was greeting Trith and Samhara. He looked confident and he seemed to know what he was doing. Kivin decided the safest course of action would be to mimic Kheron.
He stood near Kheron and also bowed, looking into the eyes of Trith. He was once again struck by the majestic gold and her eyes were really beautiful. As he straightened up, his eyes never left the gold dragon and he smiled slightly before clearing his throat. "Good day Trith." His voice was respectful and to Kivin's pleasure was strong enough to be heard. "And to you also Weyrwoman." Kivin took his eyes momentarily of Trith to bow again, this time to Samhara, before fixing his eyes back on the queen. "Can I have permission to touch the eggs?" Kivin bit his lip, maybe he had stepped over the line here. He wasn't sure wether he asked to quickly or not but he simply couldn't contain himself.

Eneth had at last arrived on the sands. It was so tedious, this not being able to fly thing. And he always felt so awkward walking like this when all the big dragons could fly gracefully. He saw that His had also arrived with that girl he had been talking with. He longed to be united with His, but that annoying firelizard was there. The bronze couldn‘t understand why F‘ren liked those little creatures so much, wasn‘t Eneth enough for F‘ren? Mine? Please come to me?
F‘ren looked apologetically at Raelwyn. Eneth’s tone had been very needy and the weyrling needed to go reassure his bonded. “I’m really sorry but Eneth needs me to be with him. I really wish I could have talked to you more to get to know you better but this isn’t a big Weyr. We’ll doubtless see each other again and I won’t forget your promise to help me with Enith.” He smiled and nodded farewell to Tydus and Rael as he started making his way to his dragon. He stopped for moment though to observe the magnificent sight of the dragons arriving with the eggs. Things really were looking better and this new clutch would the Weyr a world of good.
When F’ren was reunited with his bonded one he didn’t say anything but just leaned against the bronze, who crooned happily, and watched Trith welcome the new clutch. The gold didn’t seem to mind that the eggs weren’t hers and everything was going smoothly.
-----------
Kivin stood admiring the eggs on the hatching sands while stroking his firelizard that was currently wrapped around his neck. Toll had appeared from thin air in front of the candidate sending chaotic images to him that Kivin had finally managed to translate to that the new clutch had arrived. Kivin had been on the way to the kitchens to get something to eat but he immediately changed course to the hatching sands. He had been there early but had been pretty unnoticeable as the small candidate was a bit intimidated by the people there who all seemed to know what they were doing. It had truly been an amazing sight to see the magnificent gold arrange the eggs and Kivin had followed the progress eagerly, aware that one of the eggs might hold his future dragon. Soon he would get to attend a touching with the other candidates and he couldn’t wait to get to touch the dragon eggs.

Kivin hurried to loosen his hold on the older man. Normally he would be so embarrassed that he would want the earth to swallow him but now his cheeks colored only slightly. The new candidate had much more important things to think about now. Like what would happen next. Toll took off, eager to explore his new surroundings, and Kivin fidgeted uncomfortably. "S'lain? What do I do now? Do you need help? Where should I put my things?" Kivin stopped himself from asking more questions but there was so much he wanted, no needed, to know.
Actually being here in Cerulean made the young candidate realize that he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Yes, he'd heard stories, but this was a new Weyr that no-one knew much about and it was very far away from Fort. He hadn't the faintest idea about how things really functioned in Weyrs, he knew that stories and rumors weren't to be trusted. Kivin sighed inwardly, he would just have to take on one thing at a time. Everything would be all right, he wasn't the first hold- and craftbred candidate to ever go to a Weyr. The first step seemed simple. Get down from the blue dragon and do it fast. It seemed to him that S'lain was a very busy man.
[You are again free to make my confused candidate move around, should you wish to do so]

"Weyrbred huh? I too." It was a relief to F'ren that Rael was weyrbred, he thought that people raised in weyrs were normally easier to deal with than holdbred people. Rael sends her regards. You would probably like her, the firelizard isn't so bad but I think he doesn't like me very much. He's bronze too you know. F'ren was constantly trying to get Eneth to like the miniature dragons as he hoped to get one of his own someday, but the stubborn dragon always let him know in no uncertain terms that those creatures were to be kept far away from him. Bronze or no bronze Mine, keep him away from me, and tell that to Raelwyn. And thank her for her regards. I send mine also.
"Eneth says thank you and he sends his best regards. I should tell you however that he doesn't like firelizards much so it would be wise to keep Tydus away from him. He's normally really nice though and if you want to, I could use a hand sometimes washing him. He grows constantly and it can be tiresome to wash him all the time." F'ren looked questioningly at Rael. He knew from experience that candidates liked to be with dragons as much as they could and he really did need help so enlisting Rael's help would be perfect.
What will hatch from the eggs? F'ren snorted and grinned. "I hope dragons are in these eggs." Then F'ren turned serious for a moment. "Well, I hope they will all hatch healthy and strong dragons. We need those at the moment."
[Can't you just continue with this thread in the arrival thread?]
