S'lain nearly broke a snicker through at the sputtering he heard from the master behind them, but he held a straight face all the way back to Jaxith, where he could focus on the boy beside him. Small, and a little petite, he couldn't be more than 14 turns. The bluerider took a moment to mentally seat the lad on a dragon, but he couldn't decide what color would fit right off. Ah well, they'd find out, right?
They slowed as they neared the dragon, and the flow of people began to filter through the courtyard again, some clearly in open speculation as they stared.
He smiled as the apprentice moved of his own accord closer to Jaxith, and the blue obligingly tilted his head down a bit to look the boy in the eye, his own swirling with pleasant green and blue. He whuffed a warm breath of air over the lad, and S'lain came up to watch. "He's Jaxith. I'm S'lain. We're searchriders and the dragonhealers of Cerulean Weyr." He tilted his head a bit, giving a crooked smile. "I meant what I said back there. I think you should come with us and let me put you on the sands. Jaxi here even thinks you'd do well." He gave the blue an affectionate tap with his fisted hand in emphasis. He might even be brownrider material. Jaxith moved a bit into a more comfortable position, his tail lazily curling around to tick between the two humans.
S'lain nodded his agreement. "I know you're an apprentice healer, but that's just what we need. Even if you don't impress, it's likely that the Weyrleader would be fine with you remaining as a Weyrhealer." Don't be so negative. "Uh, not that you won't impress, just that you have options." S'lain quickly amended. "So, what would your parents say, hm?"
As if just realizing he had a beggar, the bluerider glanced down at the brown firelizard with a grin, crouching to lay his palm out invitingly. "Quite assuming, aren't you? Does he always boss people around like that?" He asked, glancing up at the apprentice with a smile to show he didn't mind.

S'lain tapped his fingers against his thigh, a small frown crossing his face. The day was trickling by, and they still had seen perhaps only one potential candidate; A young girl they'd both marked for later investigation. Their spot was too prime to give up yet in pursuit of so young a candidate with likely only the meanest of healer training under her. The bluerider took a deep breath and let it out in a frustrated snort.
It was then that a firelizard winked from between in front of the pair and began sweeping circles around Jaxith's raised head. S'lain blinked in surprise, a smile sliding across his face. They weren't that common this far north.. had it followed them? No, it began to fly closer to S'lain as if to land, and no wild flitter approached humans voluntarily. Jaxith snorted a short warning to the creature, exhibiting his usual tendency for over-protectiveness, and S'lain laid a reassuring hand against the blue hide, then raised it in invitation to the firelizard. He jerked involuntarily when the brown suddenly shot up with a harrowing shriek. Jaxith reacted similarly, searching for the creature in a motion than bumped S'lain away. His bonded is in pain. Jaxth's eyes picked up the barest hint of yellow.
Screams followed a rather large boy out of the Hall who was being harried by the brown flitter. Blood from multiple clawmarks and bites made obvious the fact that this was the tormentor of the brown's owner, but it was just an apprentice. The bully couldn't be more than teen aged. What adult in the Hall would actually let a child bully them? The answer came when the firelizard was finally called off by a much smaller boy who looked positively green with dread. S'lain jumped forward as Jaxith spat a hiss at the larger apprentice, then turned to eye the smaller boy. He'll do. The bluerider snorted, a wicked grin on his face. Of course he'll do. Kid that age with a flitter in Fort? We'll snatch him right out from under them. Almost cackling at the prod towards Fort, S'lain hurried towards the apprentice with his arm raised to get their attention even as a Master rushed outside, clearly intent on delivering harsh justice to the wayward flitter owner.
"Here now, Master healer, that's one of my Candidates you're about to punish. It's Weyr business now, please leave off and see to your other apprentice. He's going to need some numbweed for those marks." Clearly used to dealing with Holders, the bluerider spoke with steadfast authority, secretly pleased to see the Master bluster up in seeming outrage then hold his tongue when he saw the searchrider knots. S'lain didn't know this particular healer, but surely he was like many other of the older masters. S'lain was certain that word would circulate about him and his actions; he certainly wasn't unknown in the Healer Hall.
The bluerider came up behind the much smaller boy and gently used his arm to direct him towards Jaxith and away from the commotion they'd aroused. "Come lad, I need to talk to you about something." He said lightly with an encouraging smile. "I don't suppose you've ever considered being a dragonrider, eh?" We should be that lucky. He sent to Jaxith. Bring him over here. Courage around dragons is always a good sign.

While I'm sure we all know how to post up something in a forum, knowing the differences in speech, the colors, the words, it can be confusing to someone who is unaware of how things work. So, this is a shorthand guide to interpreting the dialogue and phrases one might find in a post. I will be adding more as they come up, so if you have questions or additions to suggest, please message Rouxy.
First and foremost, the differences in speech.
S'lain: "Hello." -Note the quotations.
S'lain: Jaxith? Mindspeech from a rider to his or her dragon will probably include italics and may or may not include quotation marks.
Jaxith: Hello. -Note the color and italics. This is the easiest way to differentiate dragon speech, as many dragons can be in a single post and still be distinct. Every dragon will have its own color to describe itself. Usually will not have quotation marks. The code is below for each.
Rider mind speech: Hello Dragon mind speech: Hello.
Firelizards: Flitters converse in a sort of third person generalized way conveying their emotions about a particular subject, as they don't speak. Whers will likely be seen this way as well. The idea isn't necessarily even that they are thinking in such a concise way, but more to get the feel across to the person reading, and firelizards and dragons will most certainly understand each other to this degree.
Example: Turning a tiny flip in the air, Zeek trilled his happiness. His females were back! He alighted on Rozen's shoulder and nuzzled into his typical spot with a warble of affection. Why didn't she let him come? He missed her!
Whers: Very similar to the way Flitters express speech and emotion, whers also don't speak, but the difference is that they understand on a much more complex level of thought. Almost like a dragon without speech. A Handler will typically be able to understand what his or her Wher wants simply through emotion and picture communication.
Words and Phrases
Bonded: a creature's bonded, or a human's bonded creature. Example: The firelizard trilled at his bonded, demanding food.
His, Hers, Humanpet, Mine: All of these words may be seen when a firelizard, dragon or wher are given thought about their bonded. Example: The green flitter turned a wingover, keenly aware that Hers was watching. -Note the capitalized use of the word denotes its importance, much like weyr and Weyr.
An alternative to this sentence could be. -The green flitter turned a wingover, keenly aware that her humanpet was watching.
Dragons will usually refer to a rider through their dragon. Example: Gareth's said we must come to wingdrill. -This usually means a message was sent through Gareth from his rider, 'Gareth's' meaning Gareth's rider.

Who: S'lain, Kivin and maybe any other Fort candies? *nudgenudge* What: Search Where: Healing Hall
The sun was warm in the South, rolling waves of heat through the more closed caverns. Almost overly so, but years of living there were finally making S’lain resistant to the temperature. He strolled from the Weyreleader’s chambers with scroll in hand, a thoughtful look on his face. Well, seems that trip to Fort was going to be even more interesting than he’d anticipated. Maybe he’d get to actually see some of those new healers now...
Jogging down the hall to his lower tier weyr, the bluerider pulled up short at his door, tucking the scroll into his belt to free his hand and work the knob. A large blue obstruction blocked his view of the outside sky upon opening, and he walked over to give Jaxith a friendly slap in the shoulder. A return burst of loving color and a short whuff of exhaled air was the blue’s reply as S’lain rounded up the few remaining pieces of his riding straps and hooked everything together. The blue helped place the items with a familiar touch. So, Gareth’s has a new plan for us? I thought we were going in for that new batch of cures the Healer Hall made for us? An irrelevant question as he’d heard everything, but the big blue liked reiteration.
“Mhmm. Seem’s Fort’s Weyrleaders have agreed to let us try for some Candidates out of the upcoming Healers.” S’lain scowled a bit. “Not that they won’t have already picked the place clean… maybe we’ll get lucky though, eh? You can sniff ‘em out better than any old Fort dragon.” Jaxith’s eyes whirled in amusement as he gave a solemn nod of his great head. S’lain grinned at his dragon and stepped on the proffered paw, expertly vaulting to his seat and settling into the riding harness with the ease of habit. He one-handedly strapped on his helmet and gave a sharp jerk to the packs tucked behind him to make certain they were snug. One final check to make certain he was in, and the blue padded to the edge, leaping into the sky from the low weyr. One, two, three sweeps of his large wings and they were up and soaring high enough to flash between
A chill eight seconds later saw them wink out over the familiar Healer Hall, and the unfamiliar chill in the air. S’lain gave himself over to a spine tingling chill as his breath frosted the air in front of his face, swept away almost before he could see it by the wind of Jaxith’s forward motion.
“Shards, I always forget how cold it is here. Jaxi, why didn’t you remind me?” The blue rumbled beneath him as he angled downwards in what he could tell was a draconic laugh. You don’t like it when I remind you. The blue pointed out. S’lain snorted and shook his head, glad for the protection of his riding leathers as the pair made for the landing area and hopefully some warm klah.
A short time later, and the bluerider had a spot to occupy in the busy Healer Hall near the entrance. He’d already taken care of his first task with the Hall, and now he had Jaxith scanning the various people scurrying two and fro across the large central courtyard. He’d eyed a few he thought potential, but Jaxith had negated his choices with his own interpretations. Now, the bluerider leaned against the warm hide of his dragon and mulled over their ever-shortening time until they would have to leave with the new time sensitive medicines. Surely someone here was Candidate material who had yet to be snatched by Fort! He and Jaxith owed it to their rather impressive search count to hold up their end even here.

Yeah, that would be good. I was a bit confused if he was still on the Southern Continent, as riders usually only Search in their own area, but S'lain has good reason to be visiting the Healer Hall in Fort, so I think we can work that one out

Alrighty, I just have one question for Kivin. How did he feel about the deaths? Even the hold would have felt pity or worried about their own survival. also, is he still in silver cove?

This is the list of wares that are available for purchase during Gather and Market days. Characters with crafting skills will be able to have their own booth for selling of items. Feel free to keep a tally of your purchases in your Marks page to help with calculating when the month is up.
Each booth will have items for sale made by Masters and Apprentices, with prices reflecting each. Master work items are better made, and usually more intricate, while apprentice items are likely to be sturdy, but simple. Some items will only be available from a Master, as they are intricate or difficult. Also, it is possible to haggle for items, so feel free to post up and we'll see just who's willing to give.
Characters with crafting skills are free to sell their wares. Create a description and list of wares and prices and PM it to Rouxy, which will then be placed up here. All posts to that stall will be handled by the character's player. Possible profit will be tallied based on actual roleplayed business (which can be used right away at the same Gather), and a final count of Marks for NPC business decided upon by the Admins at the end of the Gather. This tally will be based on how well/prompt the booth is played.
Leatherworks Stall Located to the side, the rich smells of tanned leather surround this well-visited stall. Two people run it, an older portly man with a smile and a younger boy, presumably his apprentice. M’vrens’ Market/Gather Square Stall
A small, well constructed open stall, this booth had tables on three sides with stands of various heights made from local woods. The stands and tables are covered in a simple, gentle blend of greens, blacks, and silvery-white fabrics to accent the merchandise. On one side, the table in black is covered in carefully arranged pieces of furs and leather that have been turned into an assortment of attractive pouches, wrappings, and the like, along with a few bundles hanging overhead of dried herbs and flowers commonly used in cooking or scents for clothes-chests. There are also a few wooden pieces mixed in, mostly boxes. The other two tables display a variety of carved, glimmering pieces in gemstone, artistic and varied. It is worked by M’vren himself, or his apprentice, which he is teaching to carve as he does. Raw gemstones litter a tray behind the counters, where either of the two can be found working in the slight shade.

-2 sets of rowan seated, rainbow obsidian. One case is hazel, inlaid with an abstract spiral in ging and dusted with ground black corundum, lined with a dark brown fur and black hide. The other available case is a pale golden yew, inlaid with red and blue corundum in the shape of a redfruit tree; lined with dark brown fur and black hide. Price: 15 Marks
All items have a variety available, and special carving can be done on request. Usually this requires a simple sketch, however, so come prepared. Larger gemstone pieces take more work and care given rarity of large, clear stones-and are thus according more expensive.
* -Darters are small wherries that resemble earth-type birds, only they have the typical six limbs of the Pernese creatures; a pair of legs, arms and wings. They stand upright and make only small use of their forearms. They can be trained, but do not bond other than the bond between an animal and the human it trusts. Consider their intelligence and abilities somewhere between the earth-type cockatiels and parrots, though some are no smarter than typical flocking birds such as wrens.
** -Bearing some resemblance to Terran hawks, lizardhawks are a group of species spread across Pern; the tropical examples sometimes take firelizards in the wild, hence the name, although tunnelsnakes and other wherries are the more usual prey. Reasonably intelligent carnivores, they may be domesticated and trained if caught young and are sometimes used to hunt other wherries

Chores

Post by Rouxy on May 24, 2010 13:17:02 GMT -5
Candidates, Weyrlings and Wherlings will all have mandatory chores to attend to in addition to their classes. The chores will rotate OOC monthly, while as with performing a job, only a single thread is required to count the chore as 'done'. Those with similar chores may create and work together in the same thread. Note: If two of your characters get accidentally put together, or someone is missing, please PM Rouxy. Chores and Rotations-For Candidates, Weyrlings and Wherlings- Chores and Rotations-For Candidates, Weyrlings and Wherlings- Changing Glows:Tazar, A'daen, Dastan Kitchen Duties: Batavia, K'ron, C'ko Library Duties: Synchella, Keiko Dock work: R'lian, Raelwyn, Valee Infirmary Work: E'ric, R'nen, Meta Childcare: Vladisyana, Z'lor, Kestrel Firestone Bagging: Mu, K'vin, Sa'niel General Cleaning: Mira, Haverisen Special Request: D'uo (V'taph), M'vren (S'lain) Changing Glows: Each and every glow around the Weyr must be changed periodically. This job is simple but lengthy, in that the Weyr is a large place to check all the glow baskets. Kitchen Duties: From slicing tubers to serving the meals, kitchen duties may require you to scrub pots and pans or pour the evening wine. Of course, you may get a tasty treat out of it, but don't expect to laze around eating all day. Library Duties: The library from Silver Cove was moved to Cerulean, and things are still out of order. There's no more need for hand copying of texts, but they need to be dusted, arranged, and replaced when necessary, as well as crushing the correct pigments for ink to jot down any number of things. Dock work: Help haul in the day's catch from the small fleet of fishing ships, learn how to mend nets and wash the docks. Also, keeping the wood in good repair might take up your day, or you might be on watch for dolphin alerts. Infirmary Work: Expect to mix numbweed salve, cut bandages, clean bedpans and change sheets, or care for non-critical patients in a nurse-like position to help the healers with their work. You may be caring for dragons or humans, depending on the need. Childcare: The creche is experiencing a large number of children, and the help they get from the older candidates and weyrlings is indispensable. Change diapers, watch a group of children or bring in a flitter and entrance them all for about five minutes. Firestone Bagging: Much as it sounds, firestone harvested on the island and brought in from offshore needs to go into bags for each dragon to carry. A dusty, dirty, tiring job, but there are breaks often and typically rounds of fruit juice for the workers and haulers. Bagging takes place on either a nearby beach, or on the docks where boats ship it in from the mine on the other side of the island. General Cleaning: Laundry, mopping, sweeping and the like of weyrs, the Great Hall and the hallways will occupy you in this chore. You'll change bedclothes, and might be assigned to clean a personal weyr. Special Request: Often times, riders or family members wish a candidate to pursue a specific task, or at least attempt to continue learning a trade skill. They would then spend chores time doing said learning or task. This is especially typical of riders taking candidates under their wing so to speak, and teaching them specialized skills. If a rider has requested the weyrling, his or her name will be included here. -If you plan to do this with a character, notify Rouxy, and she'll remove the character from normal chores. Have a plan first, don't just be trying to get out of chores Chores for MarksThere are several various chores that people, from candidates to riders, can do to earn some extra pocket change. Each of these chores is limited to its specific amount of earnings. You are free to post in as many as you wish, however each chore can only reward its number of marks once per RL month Washing Dragons: 1/4 of a Mark earned per dragon washed in the single thread. Much like a carwash, however many dragons join into the washing thread will denote how many marks you get. This amount is not deducted from the rider, however so feel free to join in an announced Dragon wash. Riders can 'tip' the washers from their own supply though. Watching the Herd: Extra watchers for the food herd can get 1/2 a Mark for their work. This is most pointedly a chore for Riders, as the watch is to protect against feline attacks. A Weyrling or Candidate would likely be too vulnerable unless aided by a small group of other people working together. Gathering Food: Hunting, fishing and gathering of wild food is good for 1/4 of a Mark. People can fish off the docks or inland rivers, hunt wherries or wild herdbeasts or look for edible plants.

Marks will be rewarded once a RL month to each person who does their job. To be considered as 'doing' their job, the character in question must have at least one thread either dedicated to their job, or in which they are demonstrating their responsibilities. For example, a healer could post an open thread for anyone who is injured, or might join in a thread to help someone. Either of these would count as practicing their craft. Be aware, when the announcement for Marks goes up, you will need to be able to link the job for each character. For Wherlings and Weyrlings, attending class and doing chores will count as doing their job. Job titles and Amount earned per OOC monthWeyrleader/Weyrwoman: 8 marks Weyrling Master: 6 marks Wherling Master: 6 marks Candidate Master: 6 marks Headwoman: 5 marks Master Healer: 6 ½ marks Journeyman Healer: 3 ½ marks Wingleader: 4 ½ marks Nightwatch Leader: 4 ½ marks Wingsecond: 3 marks Wingrider: 2 marks Searchrider: 2 marks per Search Nightwatch: 2 marks Weyrling: ½ mark and marks rewarded for chores Wherling: ½ mark and marks rewarded for chores Candidate: marks rewarded for chores Lord and Lady Holders: 8 marks Craftsperson, Master: 3 marks Craftsperson, Journeyman: 2 marks Craftsperson, Apprentice: ½ mark Other ways to earn marks-Crafters can sell their wares on Market day. -Unusual chores may have mark rewards. -Harpers can play for marks during any meal or Market day. -Feline pelts can be gathered and sold for between 2-6 Marks a piece depending on their condition and rarity. -Gathering food can earn extra marks. Information about Chores for marks can be found here. For a new player, they will start with either their base salary or at least 1 mark(whichever is higher). For every earning or transaction, a comment should be posted to your individual thread. Keep tally from there! Marks can be split into the following quantities: 1⁄32, 1⁄16, 1⁄8, ¼, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, and (rarely) 100 marks.

Everyone loves free rewards! We here at Cerulean want to help people reach those ridiculously high numbers in their posts, and here are a few good reasons to do so!
Each of these rewards can be used when they are gained, or saved up to bequeath all together on a single character. Each reward can only be used once, however, so choose wisely! Notify a Mod when you want to cash in.
50 Posts: For -every- 50 posts you have, you will earn an extra 2 Marks. This is the only reward you can get more than once, for every 50 posts you hit. For example, 50, 100, 150 -you will get 2 extra Marks at each of these points. They are not cumulative, so you will not get 4 Marks at 100. Just 2.
200 posts: When you reach 200 posts, you'll get to add another song of your choice to the popup player!
300 posts: Hey, have a flitter! A randomly chosen color will be gifted to the character of your choice in egg form for something IC.
500 posts: If you own a green firelizard, you can fly and create a clutch for her with between 5-8 eggs. Please speak to an admin before cashing this reward in so we can plan it around other clutches.
Note: We're taking requests and ideas for rewards.
